Flames 1*0 1-1-1 at Strawberry Summerfest tourney
The sixth game of the Blyth Flames U-13 soccer team was
held at Sparling Field on June 16 at 7:15 p.m. It was played
against Clinton IV. The game captain was halfback and
defensive player Jamie Pollard and the co-captain was forward
player Tanner Memer.
Clinton scored two goals on Blyth’s keeper, Jacob VanDorp.
Blyth kept digging for the ball and forward Brent Drost scored
on a breakaway. There were scoring opportunities for both
teams during the remainder of the first half, but both keepers
stopped any from going in to the net.
The score was 2-1 for Clinton at halftime.
The Flames scored a goal right to tie the game. Drost made a
pass to forward Brendon Boven who kicked the ball into the
comer of the net. Clinton scored three more goals on Blyth’s
keeper Ross MacDonald. Blyth kept fighting for the ball and
halfback Jacob Nonkes passed the ball to Boven. Boven crossed
the ball over to Drost shooting the ball into the net for Blyth.
The final score was 5-3 for Clinton.
The Flames put forth an excellent effort at the Lucknow
Strawberry Summerfest tournament and had a taste of each
game outcome, with a tie, a loss and a win.
The first game was played on Thursday night at 6:45 p.m.
against Lucknow I. Forward, Jordon Rinn and half-back Alex
Raynard were the game captains.
Blyth players played their strongest game against this team.
All dug for the ball and played their positions really well.
Forward Brent Drost made a pass to Rinn shooting the ball
into the net for the first goal of the game. Play was in both ends
of field for the rest of the first half, however, the score was 1-0
for Blyth at half time.
Both Blyth and Lucknow played a strong second half and
with only two minutes left in the game a tripping penalty was
called against Blyth. Lucknow was able to score against goalie
Greg Roetcisoender to tie up the game on this penalty shot.
There wasn’t enough time for either team to get another goal,
so the game ended in a 1-1 tie. Lucknow won the shoot-out, so
they received two points and the Flames received one point.
The Flames were up bright and early to play Seaforth I on
Saturday, June 25 at 8:45 a.m. Game captains were Hayley
Pavao and Chantel Warwick. The opponents were Seaforth I, a
strong team which played very aggressively.
Seaforth score a goal in the first half while Blyth keeper
Roetcisoender was still down after his first save of the slippery
ball.
Blyth played hard but couldn't get past Seaforth’s strong
defence. Seaforth scored another two goals giving them a 3-0
win.
Saturday was a warm day, with little breeze to ward off the
heat from the high temperatures and hot sun. Around 12:30 p.m.
Blyth met with Bayfield to play their final game of the day.
Ross MacDonald and Laura Peach were the game captains.
Pavao headed the ball towards the net. Drost scored to give
Blyth a 1-0 lead.
In the second half Pavao kicked the ball towards the net.
Drost picked up the ball, got around a few Bayfield players and
scored. Blyth was on a roll and earned a shutout.
All Blyth players stayed in their positions and played well to
obtain a victory. This earned them three points but they were a
point shy of playing in the finals as one of the top six teams.
This tournament was a great experience for all the Flames
players to work and play together as a team.
The Flames are: defence Aislinn Bremner, Warwick,
MacDonald and Jason Young; half backs, Emily Nicholson,
Alex Raynard, Jacob Nonkes and Jamie Pollard; forwards,
Pavao, Peach. Brendon Boven. Drost, Kurtis Kolkman and
Rinn. Goalie is Greg Roetcisoender.
