Sports Walton moto-cross features local riders The incredible heat and humidity this past weekend did not seem to slow down the motocross action in Walton. Over 3,500 racers and spectators endured the hot weather for the two-day event that saw some fast and furious racing. Over the two days, the event hosted 998 rider entries tn 33 different race classes from parts of Quebec, Michigan, Ohio and New York. Ontario riders came from as far as Timmins to the north, Windsor to the south-west and Ottawa to the east. The weekend racing was part of the Amateur National Qualifier Series where racers were competing for eligibility for the Grand National Races that are to be held in Walton Aug. 16-21. The event was also round 5 (of 7) of the Motovan.com Ontario Provincial Championship race series, where battles for provincial championships are running strong. Motocross is a sport that has been growing tremendously in popularity with both riders and spectators. This is evident by the number of local riders participating in this weekend’s event. The twenty-two local riders earned 12 top ten finishes with three riders earning podium wins. Mitchell Godkin rode strong with a first place win in the 50cc GP and a second place finish in the 50cc 7-8. Mackenzie Machan battled for a second place win in the 50cc 4-6 and James Bank earned a solid first place win in the ATV Pro class. U-7 TV getting closer to win The Brussels U-7 Team IV is getting closer to a win. In their last game the score was 3-1. The Brussels goal was scored by Gregory Ward. Opposition goals were scored by Katelyn Scarrow. Dawson Peachy ad Logan Kellington Team IV goalies were Delayna Smith and Zach Bastien. They did an outstanding job. Shaelynn Cloak.’ey, Micah Kipfer, Konrad McArter and Mitchell Ward came close to scoring several times. She was called safe on the play. Story and additional photo on Page 9. (jim Brown photo) Hullett PeeWee girls get season underway The Hullett PeeWee Girls have gotten their season underway. The first game was against Holmesville with t he opponents coming out on top by a score of 15-9. The girls played a great game. Rachell Ducharme hit two homeruns and a triple. The second game of the season was against Lucknow. Hullett played well but Lucknow came out ahead with a score of 19-13. Kaitlyn Roetcisoender had an amazing inning in the fourth. She managed to grab, not just one, but two hard-line drives down the third base line and make perfect throws to first for two outs. There were great hits by Amanda Fryer and Cassie Salverda who both scored doubles. You won’t be disappointed! WINGHAM • 357-4503 Lightning falls to Goderich I Blyth Lightning’s U-ll co-ed team hosted a soccer game on June 7 at Sparling Field 1. Goderich I, sponsored by Canadian Tire, was the visiting team. Halfback player Zachary Drost was the game captain. Leendert vanDorp was the Lightning’s goalkeeper for the' first half of _the game. He made some great saves, however three balls managed to get past him giving Goderich a 3-0 lead at half time. For the second half of the game first time goalkeeper Michele Studhalter made a great effort at covering the net. Although the Lightning players kept digging for the ball they could not get around Goderich’s strong defence and goalie. Goderich scored another four goals, making the final score a 7-0 victory for Goderich. These are very rewarding positions and minor hockey needs them to be filled. Meetings are held the first Monday of every month. Your teams and your children need these positions to be filled. Late registration will result in additional fees. Power Skating is offering 10 week and 20 week sessions. Remember hockey, power skating and figure skating is not only great exercise for your kids but also a great social and fun time for the children and their parents.S_________________________r
