County EMS expresses appreciation
THE EDITOR,
The County of Huron Emergency
Medical Services would like to
express its appreciation to those
individuals who have taken the time
to provide care to their fellow
citizens. On numerous occasions,
we find ourselves confronted with
situations where the public reaction
exceeds our expectations and our
letter of appreciation below is a

Veteran critical of War Museum
THE EDITOR,
Recently, my wife visited the
Canadian War Museum in Ottawa.
She was required to pay an entrance
fee of $10. even though she showed
the ticket taker an inscription
concerning a $10,000 donation
made by our family to the museum.
Her father, an infantry colonel,
was killed in World War II. She is a
war historian and has been most
helpful to the National Council of
Veteran Associations (51 veterans’
organizations).
Last year she visited the British
War Museum in London. England
and the Australian War Museum in
Melbourne. Both advertised:
Admission: Free.
She was told that she could enter
the CWM free if she could prove
that her husband was a veteran or
that she had served. She
complained. Her rationale was that
the CWM was intended to teach all
Canadians about war - not just
veterans of their families.
Incidentally, visitors continue to
be shocked at the atrocity paintings
of two peacekeepers charged with
the murder of a Somali youth.
Training scheduled

indicated he would have a place to

projects they will be looking into
such as self-contained breathing
apparatus (SCBA) units, a high
volume hose and vehicle extrication
equipment.
“Extra training has been scheduled
on a county basis,” he said. “Instead
ot sending firefighters to the fire
college in Gravenhurst. we will be
offering some of these courses in
this area.”
Bedard said fire prevention will
also be stepped up in Huron East.
“I will be enhancing our smoke
alarm program, making sure all
homes have a smoke alarm,” he said.
“If they don’t have one, we will
provide one for them.”
It is hoped to have the firefighters
able to go door-to-door to

such member of the public.
Dear Mr. Tremblett:
I would like to advise you that two
of our staff have requested that a
letter of appreciation be sent to you
on behalf of the County of Huron
Emergency Medical Services.
I was advised that on the night of
May 2, you happened upon an
individual who had become vital
Unfortunately, the paintings acts as
magnets. Many of the younger
visitors headed for the atrocity
paintings. They are a ‘start
attraction.”
Also, a placard in the CWM states
that 41.4 per cent of those who
served in Korea contracted venereal
disease. That announcement is
misleading. Some soldiers with
whom I served in the Royal
Winnipeg Rifles in England came
down with venereal disease. Many
were treated four or five times, but
the CWM’s figure apparently
counts each incidence as separate.
Moreover, VD was a crime under
Army Regulations and, accordingly,
the soldier was punished.
The story continues. While my
wife was at the War Museum, I was
at a hotel in Ottawa. I telephoned,
using the number in the CWM
pamphlet. I was advised that,
although the pamphlet gave a long
distance number for Hull, it was a
local call. I then checked and the
hotel told me that all toll-free
numbers require an extra charge on
my hotel bill of 75 cents.
Many visitors will obviously be
accomplish this.
Other projects being considered
include a fire extinguisher
demonstration for area businesses
and workplaces and the purchase of
a hazard house model. He explained
this unit is a small model house that
sits on a table, allowing children to
visualize the effects of fire.
“It is a great tool to bring into the
classroom setting,” said Bedard.
“However, it is expensive and other
revenue avenues are being
explored.”
Assuming the flash over unit costs
$60,000 and the fire safety trailer
costs $30,000, Huron East will have
$36,000 remaining from its $50,000
grant.
Bedard indicated that of that
$36,000, $11,160 would go to the
Brussels fire station, based on its 20
firefighters; $11,520 to the Grey
station, based in its 21 firefighters
and $13,320 to the Seaforth station,
based on its 24 firefighters.
signs absent. Upon the arrival of one
of our vehicles, you were witnessed
doing mouth-to-mouth ventilations
and cardio pulmonary resuscitation.
It is my understanding that you
further assisted the crew by going in
the ambulance to perform chest
compressions while they ventilated
the patient and performed other life
saving actions.
The crew would like to thank you
from out of town. If they stay at a
hostelry in Ottawa, they will be
charged an extra 75 cents for a toll-
free call, even though Hull is
normally accessible through the
Ottawa telephone exchange with no
surcharge.
Two comments are valid. The

CWM is an excellent tribute to
Canada’s military heritage. Should,
however, we be comforted that the
rave reviews are mostly about the
architectural appeal, with severe
criticism of the contents on the

I have letters from two former
long-term employees of the War
Museum who are severely critical of
the exhibits.
