PEOPLE AROUND AUBURN By Debbie Bauer Call 529-7820 The Auburn community wishes Gordon Daer a speedy recovery. The Andrews families had Christmas in June at Auburn Hall. Now doesn’t that sound like fun? There isn’t enough chance for presents in June and this solves that dilemma very nicely. Jean and Janette Portas from Windsor were visiting Bill and Bernadette Andrews and Sandy and Shirley Andrews. Sandy and Shirley Andrews and Greg and Nancy Park attended the baptism of their mutual grand­ nephew Reed Thomas Helm at Dungannon Church. Following the service the family gathered at Doug and Sue Brown’s for lunch. Reed’s parents are Jenni and Doug Helm. Congratulations to Jim and Grace Cartwright who celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary on Saturday. June 4. Knox celebrated communion and welcomed two new members. David and Karen Atkinson, into the Knox Church community. Auburn community extends sympathy to Stewart Ament and his family on the passing of his wife Mildred. They were from the Auburn area but also lived in Blyth for many years. Some Auburn residents travelled to a matinee dinner theatre near New Club carpools to meeting The women of the Walkerburn Club met at Deanna Snell’s on May 31 and carpooled to Pat Hunking’s, near Belgrave. Mrs. Snell opened the meeting with a quiz and a reading. Grandmother’s Wish. She followed with prayer. Betty Archambault read the minutes of the last meeting and took the roll call, which was answered with gardening hints. Bernice Norman gave the treasurer’s report. A thank you note was read for the money donated to help send a child to camp. Plans were made to go to Stratford on June 23 to see the quilts for cancer. They will meet in the morning and carpool to Stratford. They will have a potluck picnic by the river before viewing the quilts. The group has been contacted about making favours for the patients’ trays at Clinton hospital. Walkerburn opted to make them for Labour Day. Everyone had brought some plants for sale and Audrey Boonstoppel proved once again to be an excellent auctioneer. Needless to say. the auction was very successful. Eileen McClinchey and Pat Hunking served a lunch of fruit bread, jelly and cheese. Everyone enjoyed a social time before heading for home. Memorial service held on Saturday Hamburg last Thursday for a roast beef dinner with rolled spare ribs followed by a two-hour concert by the Walters family. The theatre is a barn located way out in the country much like the playhouse in Grand Bend. The family consists of the parents and three adult children. Darren, one of the children, plays 10 instruments. It was a very professional performance of country music and fiddle playing. Their shows go from the end of May to Thanksgiving weekend. Congratulations to Matt Thomson and Erin (Hickey) Thomson on the surprise entrance, one month early, of baby girl Cara Isabelle. Cara weighed in at 5 lbs. I oz. She is the shared granddaughter of Pat and Bill Thomson of fort Erie and Jim and Theresa Hickey of Auburn. Best of luck to all. 16 at WI The Auburn Women’s Institute met May 19 in the Auburn Community Hall for their meeting. Sixteen were present. Erma Cartwright, president, opened the meeting with the Ode, Mary Stewart Collect and O Canada FROM AUBURN meeting She was thanked by Lois Elliott who also gave her a donation from the group for the Cancer Society. Roll call was a recipe for healthy hearts. A donation of $50 will be sent to the Children’s Aid Society to On Saturday. June 4 a memorial service was held for the late George Robertson in the church at Ball’s Cemetery with burial in the FROM CRANBROOK cemetery. George was well known to many Auburn residents and is brother to Bill Robertson of Auburn. Our sincere sympathies to the entire family. The trustees have had the interior of the church repainted and it is Women attend WI Several women attended the Women’s Institute District annual held in the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Milverton on May 31. At this meeting the three districts of East Huron, Perth North and Perth Centre amalgamated to become the Huron/Perth District. Darlene Harding of the Howick Women’s Institute is the first president of this new district to which 17 branches belong. Walton and Majestic (Brussels) Women’s Institutes are the two branches which have members from this area. much improved. They are now in the process of replacing the roof. The church has been designated a heritage building. Ball’s Cemetery will be holding its 79th annual decoration service on July 3 at 3 p.m. followed with a reading. The Clothes Line. Gwen Bidwell convenor of the ROSE programme introduced Paulene Doherty from Listowel. She spoke on cancer and gave many suggestions for healthy living. send a child to camp. Theatre catering was discussed and the next one will be June 28. The Lions dinner is in October. Janis Vodden had several interesting contests. Lunch was served. M. Huether hosts card party Mary Huether hosted the card party in Cranbrook on Friday evening along with Edna McLellan and Neil Hatt. Share-the-Wealth winners were Eileen Mann and Allison Sleightholm. Viola Adams won the travelling lone hand prize. Yvonne Knight had the, high score on a pink card and Margaret Peebles was high with a white card. Not so lucky were Isabelle Craig and Eluned McNair. The tally card winners were Judy Hahn, Isabelle Bremner, Bill Craig, Jeanette Toner, Leslie Knight, Myrna Burnett, Lloyd Smith. Leota Thompson, Marion Harrison, Mary Davidson, Gail Smith, and Beryl Smith. Many area residents attended the Brussels Lions elimination draw and supper at the BM&G Community Centre on Saturday evening. Congratulations to Ken and Bessie Johnston, the big winners and Marg and Helen Hetherington from Cranbrook who made the winner’s list. Members of the Monkton Presbyterian Church spent the weekend at Camp Kintail. While counsellors led activities with the children, the adults worked on projects to improve the camp buildings. On Sunday, members of the Cranbrook congregation joined Monkton for their outdoor church service and barbecue. Johnathon Lee welcomed everyone to the service. Catharine Young had the call to worship, Janice Stahlke, Bev Bannerman and Carol Bannerman led in prayer during the service. Colleen McEwen led the responsive psalm reading and Christine Francis read the scripture. The junior Sunday school sang, Hope Celebration and the senior Sunday school class had a skit about the Good Samaritan. Cheryl Young based the sermon on the Good Samaritan. The camp counsellors sang a song and all the Sunday school choir sang, Family of God. Sean Mitchell played the violin before the offering was collected by Kristen Stahlke, Kyla McEwen, Danielle Stewart and Catharine Young. Although the teachers may be still on work to rule, the annual fun fair and grand opening of the river dock at Grey Central Public School will still be held on Saturday, June 11.
