FROM BELGRAVE Stolen vehicle recovered PEOPLE AROUND BELGRAVE By Linda Campbell Call 357-2188 Mr. and Mrs. Tibor Oravec and son Kristien from Akron, Ohio visited recenlly with Mrs. Mabel Wheeler. Alzheimer’s disease: Signs to look out for near river On May 26 at 9:30 a.m. a vehicle was reported stolen from a resident on Mamoch Line in North Huron. A 1995 Chev pickup truck was stolen from the driveway. The keys had been left in the ignition and the vehicle was unlocked. Later that day the truck was recovered just off of Belgrave Road near the Maitland River down a steep pathway. The investigation continues. If you can help solve this theft call the local OPP or Crime Stoppers. Attempted break-in at Carlow Huron West executive The executive for the Huron West District of the Women’s Institute was elected at its 10th annual meeting on May 30. (Jim Brown photo) District WI meets in Belgrave store On May 30 at approximately midnight an attempted break-in occurred at the Carlow General Store located on Bly th Road in Ashfieid-Colborne-Wawa- nosh. The owner who lives at the store in an upper apartment, heard glass breaking, then saw a young man entering the building through a smashed front door. The man fled the scene in a dark­ coloured sports utility vehicle towards Blyth. The investigation continues. By Lois Elliott District PRO The Huron West District of the Women’s Institute held its 105th annual meeting at the Belgrave WI Hall on May 30. President Mabel Jacklin chaired the meeting which was hosted by Belgrave Branch with the theme. Sharing Our Heritage. Opening exercises and annual reports filled the morning agenda. London Area president Glenna Ladell, stated the curator’s workshop will be held Aug. 9 at Dashwood Community Centre. A large display of dolls will be an added attraction. London Area Convention is on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at Mount Brydges in the Caridoc Centre. Ms. Ladell’s display included various fact sheets, brochures and inserts of the new handbooks along with special pins, badges and other items of interested. More quilts are needed for the quilt show and sale in Mississauga from Sept. 16 - 18 with quilt registration being extended to Aug. 1. A district bus trip to this show is planned for Sept. 16. For further information call Mabel at 357-1455. London Area is hosting the provincial conference Aug. 11 - 16, 2006 at Fanshawe College, London. Helpers are needed. Others bringing greetings were Lucy Hesse, from Huron East, Jane Dearing, from Huron South and Doris Spence from Perth South. Jean Fraser of the Huron County Historical Society reported on the year’s activities and announced she has resigned as membership chair, an office she has held for eight years. The annual dinner meeting is Oct. 28. The 4-H report was presented by Darrell Bergsma. This is the 90th anniversary year. There are 250 members. Membership cost has risen to $50 per person. Each year a cash donation is given to “Friends of 4-H”. The District Sewing Courses will be beginning Sept. 28 and will be held at the OMAF office at Clinton. Call Mabel Jacklin if interested. A large selection of plants and miscellaneous items were sold quickly prior to the potluck noon luncheon. Mabel Jacklin, an Institute member of 35 years, presented information on the early history of Wingham and area. The first newspaper was produced in Belgrave. She stressed we must not forget our family histories. Dungannon members - Debbie and Joanne, entertained with readings. The new slate of officers was installed by Glenna Ladell. Newly installed president, Debbie Bauer, RR2, Auburn presented outgoing president, Mabel, with a hibiscus shrub. The 2006 district annual will be hosted by the Auburn Branch. Members concluded the meeting by singing God Save The Queen.
