Day of celebration at United Church It was a day of celebration at Londesborough United Church on Sunday, June 5. Four persons joined the fellowship of Londesborough United through the transfer of membership - Barry and Kendra Brohman and Paul and Missy Gibbings. The congregation welcomes these two young couples and their families into their midst. Assisting Rev. Pat Cook with the sacrament of communion were elders Marjorie Duizer, Laura Scott, Ed Salverda, John Jewitt, Don Goodall and Brian Whyte. This week’s ministry of music was offered by the men’s choir who sang Power in the Blood, I Heard an Old, Old Story and the tongue-in-cheek number. You’re Pretty Lucky, Mr. Churchman. Sunday school children convened for class as church began that morning and came upstairs for the communion service. When they gathered at the front for their time with Rev. Pat, she told them that on June 10, the United Church of Canada would be celebrating its 80th anniversary/birthday. She spoke about changes to Sunday school in those 80 years and Sing a song Sadie Chalmers performed a song appropriate for these hot days when she sang Ice Cream at the Blyth Public School Festival of the Arts on May 31. (Vicky Bremner photo) Special Olympics Torch Run9 Tues. The local Law Enforcement Torch Run will be held on June 14 and will be represented by local Ontario Provincial Police members, Bluewater Youth Centre members, Community Living employees and clients, and potential future Olympians. After leaving Wingham, the group running in the north will arrive at the Howson Mill Elevators parking lot, which is located on Westmoreland Street in Blyth. - At approximately 10 a.m. they will begin heading west on Queen Street. From there they will go south through the downtown area, to Grand View Restaurant, on the corner of Queen Street and Blyth Road. At this point they will load up onto the bus, partake in refreshments showed them a variety of certificates that chronicle some of those changes - attendance, cradle roll, mission band and baptism certificates. Then Gail Lear, who has been a member of the Londesborough congregation all her life, spoke to the children about Sunday school as she remembers her time there. She noted that Sunday school classes were held either before or after the regular church service and adults even attended classes. It was not unusual to have 100 persons on the roll in past years and music was always a part of the time together. God’s Call was the title of Rev. Pat’s message. The supporting scripture passage was Genesis 12: 1- 9. This Old Testament reading is the story of God’s calling to Abraham to lead His people to a new land. The responsive psalm, Psalm 33, reassures the reader that God is their help and shield. Abraham was asked by God to leave his home and country, his comfort zone, and go where God would lead him. Abraham did not ask all those questions you and I might think we needed to know under the circumstances, he just supplied by sponsors, and leave for the third destination of the event, Clinton. As a result, he and his family received many blessings and a bright future from God. This request was not to show God’s power but to demonstrate His unending love for the faithful God calls each of us into the future/unknown so we can grow in faith and discover new horizons. He will give the strength and courage for the faith journey. Just as 80 years ago this week He gave the organizers of the United Church of Canada the courage to trust their decision to found a new sect. Next Sunday, June 12, is Sunday school promotion and award Kids on the Block at HCPS The Kids on the Block program was presented to the Grade 3 and 4 pupils at Hullett Central Public School on May 24. This particular presentation raises awareness about harassment and abuse and offers coping strategies. The four winners of Hullett’s own science fair held earlier this spring competed at the regional competition in Seaforth on April 6. Those winners were first, Heather Hulley and Kaitlyn Roetcisoender with plant micro-organisms; second, Janneke Barten with bubbles and third, Caitlin Plant with oil spills. Congratulations to all the pupils for their research and presentation of a subject which interested them. For earlier generations, the choices of career paths for girls after high school were more or less limited to nursing, teaching or secretarial work. In the past two decades those choices have broadened considerably. On May 27, the Foundation for Enriching Education and Women Today held a career day for Grade 8 and 9 students in this area at the Betty Cardno Centre in Clinton. Some Grade 7 girls from Hullett attended as well. The day and its speakers offered an awareness of the diversity of career choices for young women in today’s world. The school parent council has purchased a new video camera for the school with the monies raised through the penny drive held in each classroom in January, February and March. This camera will assist in the media literacy part of the curriculum. Because the Avon Maitland board has not reached an agreement with its teachers, the regional field day to be held in Seaforth has been cancelled for this year.
