U-18 soccer The Brussels U-18 squad took on the St. Columban team on Monday evening at the Brussels soccer field, located behind the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre. Brussels held a 2-1 advantage at halftime. (Jim Brown photo) Team I blanks Team II Last Thursday, the two Brussels U-9 teams faced off behind the arena. They had met on two other occasions and both of those games resulted in ties of 1-1. Each team was looking to take a win against their rival opponents. As these kids, ages seven, eight and nine, attend Grey and Brussels schools together, they had been making bets on which team would beat the other. It was rumoured that some parents may have been doing the same. After a “pep talk” rrom the coaches, the two teams took to the field. Wyatt Ducharme scored the first goal within a few minutes of the game starting, to take the lead. Both teams were playing to out-maneuver the other. The ball passed equally between the two sides as parents cheered their favourite players on. Mitch Kellington scored at the end of the first half, making it 2-0 for Team I. In the second half, many shots were attempted on the nets by both sides but only Matt McNichol was able to score near the end of the game, making it 3- 0. Tim Waechter, in net for Team I, earned him his shutout of the season. Lightning handed 1st loss Blyth Lightning travelled to Seaforth for its fourth game of the season, on Tuesday, May 31. The game captain was forward Avery Kikkert. The Lightning met a strong group of soccer players when they played the Seaforth U-11 squad. Seaforth scored when the ball went off the goal post and into the face of Blyth’s goalkeeper, Leendert VanDorp, before passing the goal line. Seaforth’s second goal happened when Blyth’s keeper got caught too far in front of the net and the ball rolled in behind him. Seaforth scored another goal, making the score 3-0, before the half time whistle blew. Nick Brandon played in net for Blyth during the second half of the game. Brandon made many great saves throughout the second half. Seaforth played a strong defensive game and Blyth just couldn’t get around them. The final score was 6-0 win for Seaforth. The Flames game captain was halfback Jacob Nonkes, while forward Kurtis Kolkman was the co captain. The first half of the game was well played by both teams. Clinton had the ball in Blyth’s end the majority of the time, but Blyth’s defense worked hard to keep the ball out of the net. Goalkeeper Jacob VanDorp "made several great saves and at the end of half-time there was no score for either team. Ross MacDonald went in net for the Flames during the second half of the game. Clinton was first to score a goal with a beautiful high shot in the corner of Blyth’s net. Blyth got on the scoreboard when forward Tanner Merner passed the ball to Brent Drost who shot it into the net for the Flames. Clinton scored another goal on a breakaway, then Brendon Boven passed the gall to Drost, who put it in the top corner of the Clinton net for another goal. Clinton kept the pressure on and scored another goal. Then in the last five minutes of the game the Flames simply fell apart. They were down by only one goal, but they gave up and didn't manage to obtain ball control and as a result, Clinton scored three more goals. The final score was a disappointing one for the Flames with a 6-2 victory for Clinton. Wingham ironmen general manager, Steve Coulter of Brussels is retiring after four years of service to the team. Team president Bill McGrath, left, presented Coulter with a gift during the team’s year-end banquet on Friday evening.
