For what appears to be the first
time a Comrade from Zone Cl has
been eleeled to the Ontario
Command as vice-chair.
Eric Ross of the Brussels Legion
Branch #218 was chosen provincial
vice-chairman on the first ballot at
the convention held in Cambridge
last month.
“We have records going back to
the 30s and as far as we can see I'm
the first one to be elected as vice
chair to the Ontario command from
Zone C1.”
After serving as Deputy District C
Commander from 2001 to 2003.
then as Commander. Ross had
initially set his sights on the position
of vice-president of the Ontario
command. “Commander is a
stepping stone on the way to
president. But 1 knew it was going to
be tough.”
There are three vice-presidents,
however, one incumbent wasn’t
going to be defeated, said Ross. A
total of nine were vying for the two
spots.
“It was two very worthy people
who won,” said Ross, who went out
on the fifth and final ballot.
“Nobody ever got a majority, it was
that balanced."
Once eliminated. Ross was
approached by the provincial
president suggesting he put his name
forward for the spot of vice-
chairman. “Two had been
nominated, one from Toronto and
one from Huntsville. I had to come
up quick with a speech explaining
why the voters should choose me."
As vice-chair Ross will, with the
chairman. lead the Ontario
Command meetings. He will attend
I unctions on behalf of the Command
and is already booked to be guest
speaker at the Kingston Legion in
October.
He will attend various events as
delegated by the president and will
assist the chairman in running the
convention.
It is a busy position, but Ross's
previous experience has prepared
him. “In the past two years as
District Commander I attended 221
official functions.” This includes thp
Dominion conventions in Edmonton
and Halifax.
He was proud of the fact that the
District hosted a “successful"
Dominion track and field event
during his term as well as the
provincial convention, for the first
time in 40 years.
Ross acknowledges that he would
not be able to invest so many hours
into the Legion activities without the
support of family and of his
employers Tim and Bill Tolton.
“Everyone understands what it takes
on their part for me to be able to
volunteer and still work."
The investment of personal time is
well worth it as far as Ross is
concerned. “It’s great to be involved
with this, especially now in the Year
of the Veteran. I was excited to be
involved with the VE Day events
and met some wonderful veterans.”
Those aquaintances are a big part
of the reason Ross is striving to
move up the ladder. “There is such
enjoyment in meeting different
people, being involved with the
veterans and trying to make a
difference for them and the Royal
Canadian Legion."
