suffered a little while, will himself
restore you and make you strong,
firm and steadfast.” (I Peter 5:10)
Unlike computer hard drives,
which, once they fail are useful only
for doorstops or paperweights,
people who entrust themselves to
God’s therapeutic hands can see
their lives dramatically changed for
the better.
Life-long addictive patterns can be
overcome; roots of pride and
bitterness that poison relationships
can be exposed and resolved, based
on Jesus’ servant-style forgiveness.
But the restoration is an option, and
must be something chosen.
One day a barber trimming a
pastor’s hair asked a tough question.
“If there is a loving God, how can he
permit so much poverty, suffering,
and violence among people? Why
doesn’t he save them from all
that?”
Just then a disheveled street
person walked by. The man was
unshaven and filthy, with long
scraggly hair hanging down his
neck. The pastor gestured towards
him and said. “You are a barber and
claim to be a good one, so why do
you allow that man to go unkempt
and unshaven?”
“Why, why...” the barber stuttered,
“he never gave me a chance to fix
him up.”
“Exactly,” said the pastor. “Often,
people are what they are because
they reject God’s help.”
We have no excuse for losing data
on hard drives; a computer’s
operating system now comes with
Backup as one of the built-in
accessories. Since the failure earlier
this month. I’ve even downloaded a
freeware utility to help automate the
task. I just have to get around to
doing it..: Similarly, Jesus’ saving /
restoring offer is free to all; we just
have to turn to Him and ask.
