On Tuesday the fed steers and heifers sold on a steady market. Choice steers and heifers sold $88 to $93 with sales to $106.25; second-cut steers and heifers sold $83 to $87. The cows sold under pressure. On Thursday the veal sold under pressure with prices $2 to $3 lower. The lambs sold on a strong active trade with prices steady to last week. On Friday all weights and classes of Stockers sold on a steady market. There were 523 steers on offer. Sidney F. Bauman, St. Clements, consigned one gold steer weighing 1,285 lbs. which sold to Dominion Meat Packers for $106.25. His over­ all offering of eleven steers averaged 1,284 lbs. sold for an average price of $92.25. Six steers consigned by Amos B. Frey. Wallenstein, aver­ aged 1.425 lbs. which sold for an average price of $97.03 with his top four red steers averaging 1.400 lbs. selling for $98.50. Skinner Farms. Mitchell, consigned one limousin steer weighing 1,445 lbs. which sold to Norval Meat Packers for $90.50. Eleven steers consigned by Abner and Irene Bauman, Wroxeter, aver­ aged 1,455 lbs. which sold for an average price of $90.49 with their top three red steers averaging 1,452 lbs. selling for $92.25. Woodham, averaged 1,273 lbs. selling for an average price of $87.52 with sales to $88.60. Johnston Farms, Bluevale, con­ signed one black heifer weighing 1,215 lbs. which sold to Highland Packers Ltd. for $93.75. Their over­ all offering of thirty heifers averaged 1.395 lbs. selling for an average price of $85.72. Three gold heifers consigned by Lyle Noble, Glencairn, averaged 1,327 lbs. selling for an average price of $85.16 with sales up to $88.75. John Wiersma, Blyth. consigned seven heifers averaging 1,225 lbs. which sold for an average price of $84.01 with his top limousin heifer weighing 1,285 lbs. selling to Holly Park Meat Packers for $89.50. Four heifers consigned by David Bowles. Brussels, averaged 1,269 lbs. which sold for an average price of $83.37 with his top two limousin heifers averaging 1.283 lbs. selling to Highland Packers Ltd. for $89.25. Fifteen heifers consigned by Simeon F. Martin, Listowel. averaged 1,330 lbs. which sold for an average price of $81.54 with his top gold heifer weighing 1.340 lbs. selling for $90.25. There were 248 cows on offer. D1 2 birds test negative for West Nile in Huron The Huron County Health Unit reports that since the beginning of this year's surveillance season the public has reported 19 dead birds. Of these, only eight were either crows or blue jays, which are the only birds being collected for West Nile virus testing this season. Only two birds were suitable for testing, and both were found to be negative for the virus. However, the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care has reported that three birds have tested positive for the virus in eastern Ontario (Hastings and Prince Edward Counties). Local residents are asked to con­ tinue to report the location of dead crows and blue jays throughout the spring and summer to the Huron County Health Unit West Nile virus infoline at 519-482-3416 Ext. 2001, or if calling long distance, dial 1- 877-837-6143 Ext. 2001. The health unit also asks residents, cottagers and business owners to think mosquito prevention when working in the yard or cleaning up around commercial properties. The best way to keep mosquitoes away is to clean up areas where they like to breed.
