2 birds test negative
for West Nile in Huron
The Huron County Health Unit
reports that since the beginning of
this year's surveillance season the
public has reported 19 dead birds.
Of these, only eight were either
crows or blue jays, which are the
only birds being collected for West
Nile virus testing this season.
Only two birds were suitable for
testing, and both were found to be
negative for the virus. However, the
Ministry of Health and Long Term
Care has reported that three birds
have tested positive for the virus in
eastern Ontario (Hastings and Prince
Edward Counties).
Local residents are asked to con
tinue to report the location of dead
crows and blue jays throughout the
spring and summer to the Huron
County Health Unit West Nile virus

or if calling long distance, dial 1-

The health unit also asks residents,
cottagers and business owners to
think mosquito prevention when
working in the yard or cleaning up
around commercial properties. The
best way to keep mosquitoes away is
to clean up areas where they like to
breed. Unlike birds or other insects,
mosquitoes do not By very far and
tend to stay close to breeding sites,
so you are more likely to be bitten by
a mosquito in your own backyard.
Residents living in towns are
requested to sweep up grass clip-
