Potluck begins Happy Gang meeting The Londesborough Happy Gang Seniors began their gathering Wednesday, May 25, with a potluck dinner. Entertainment following the meal was provided by two vocal pupils of Barti Bosman. Kelsey Falconer, 10, and Lexie Aitkin, seven, shared their musical talent with the seniors. Congratulations were offered to Len and Betty Archambault for placing second at the Seniors Games for District 29 in Grand Bend on May 11 for their cribbage playing. The couple will compete at regional competition in August. During the business part of afternoon, details were settled the prizes to be presented to two graduating pupils of Hullett CentralFROM LONDESBORO UCW leads service at United Church In the absence of Rev. Pat Cook who was attending London Conference, ladies of the UCW conducted the morning service at Londesborough United Church on Sunday, May 28. Assisting president Laura Scott were Cheryl Trewartha. Joan Whyte and Jo^n Goodall. Marshal Szusz was pianist for the service. Kim Roetcisoender read a minute for missions regarding how the mission and service fund of the United Church of Canada uses their resources. Co-superintendent of the Sunday school, Catherine Allen, handled the children’s time at the front. Directed by Erica Horbanuik, the five members of the intermediate girls’ choir favoured the congregation with two interesting numbers. The responsive psalm. Psalm 46, a song of rejoicing. reminded everyone that God is a refuge and strength always. The just shall live by faith was the message in Romans 1: 16-17. Jesus likened the man who built his house on rock to those who heard His word and lived by that faith in Matthew 7: 21-29. The Old Testament reading, 1 Kings 19: 9- 18, is the account of the Lord commissioning Elijah to call Elisha to help him in his work with the Israelites. Jane Hoggart and her friend, Daisy, addressed the congregation, as Companions on the Way. Daisy is a three-year-old small terrier mix who accompanies Jane to area nursing homes and long-term care facilities. As part of the local therapy dogs program, Jane and Daisy offer unconditional love and friendship to the residents of these places. Jane recognizes that seniors and others in residential living are lonely and her dog brings love to them on his visits. The two spend two days a week visiting old friends and making new ones across Huron County. Any dog who is non-aggressive with strangers can be certified for the therapy dog program. Daisy’s gentle and well-behaved manner was obvious during their time with the congregation and her friendliness warmed the hearts of all present. Next Sunday, June 5, LAWN QUESTIONS? Researcher Helen Dale had some interesting facts to present to the present-day group as found in the archives of an area paper. Myrtle Fairservice convened an information meeting al the Londesborough Hall on July 9, 1981. Representatives from seniors’ groups in Clinton and Blyth were on hand to. offer their experience. Coincidentally, on hand that particular day to offer musical entertainment were Barb Bosman and her two daughters and Pat and Mark Stackhouse. Shortly thereafter, the caretaker of the hall, Reg Lawson, was asked to book the hall for the first and third Tuesdays of each month for meetings. Each of the 30 signed-up members paid $.50 at each gathering to maintain the club. The election of officers took place on Aug. 4, 1981 and the slate was: president, Elsie Shaddick; first vice- president, Verna Glazier; secretary, Jean Scott; treasurer, Margaret Taylor; press secretary, Dora Shobbrook. The suggestion by pianist, Beth Knox, to call the group the Happy Gang Seniors was adopted Aug. 12. Card playing was a staple part of each meeting’s entertainment in those early days with euchre and cribbage being played as well as bingo. For the first Christmas meeting it was decided to have a catered meal - that much is still the same. the for the Londesborough United will observe the sacrament of holy communion and receive new members into its church family. Stay following the service to welcome these new members. The board of stewards is hosting Coffee and Cookies and welcome donations to sponsor a challenged youth to attend Reach for the Rainbow camp this summer. The men’s choir will practise at 10 a.m. on June 5 and offer their ministry of music during the morning service. Ball game Two-year-old Quaid Kerr of Blyth appears to be outrunning Steve Cook to a loose ball during the Living Waters ball game held Saturday evening at the Blyth ballpark. Actually, little Quaid was playing by himself when a ball rolled past him as players warmed up for the game.
