Potluck begins Happy Gang meeting
The Londesborough Happy Gang
Seniors began their gathering
Wednesday, May 25, with a potluck
dinner. Entertainment following the
meal was provided by two vocal
pupils of Barti Bosman. Kelsey
Falconer, 10, and Lexie Aitkin,
seven, shared their musical talent
with the seniors.
Congratulations were offered to
Len and Betty Archambault for
placing second at the Seniors Games
for District 29 in Grand Bend on
May 11 for their cribbage playing.
The couple will compete at
regional competition in August.
During the business part of
afternoon, details were settled
the prizes to be presented to two
graduating pupils of Hullett CentralFROM LONDESBORO
UCW leads service
at United Church
In the absence of Rev. Pat Cook
who was attending London
Conference, ladies of the UCW
conducted the morning service at
Londesborough United Church on
Sunday, May 28. Assisting president
Laura Scott were Cheryl Trewartha.
Joan Whyte and Jo^n Goodall.
Marshal Szusz was pianist for the
service.
Kim Roetcisoender read a minute
for missions regarding how the
mission and service fund of the
United Church of Canada uses their
resources.
Co-superintendent of the Sunday
school, Catherine Allen, handled the
children’s time at the front. Directed
by Erica Horbanuik, the five
members of the intermediate girls’
choir favoured the congregation
with two interesting numbers.
The responsive psalm. Psalm 46, a
song of rejoicing. reminded
everyone that God is a refuge and
strength always. The just shall live
by faith was the message in Romans
1: 16-17. Jesus likened the man who
built his house on rock to those who
heard His word and lived by that
faith in Matthew 7: 21-29. The Old
Testament reading, 1 Kings 19: 9-
18, is the account of the Lord
commissioning Elijah to call Elisha
to help him in his work with the
Israelites.
Jane Hoggart and her friend,
Daisy, addressed the congregation,
as Companions on the Way. Daisy is
a three-year-old small terrier mix
who accompanies Jane to area
nursing homes and long-term care
facilities. As part of the local therapy
dogs program, Jane and Daisy offer
unconditional love and friendship to
the residents of these places. Jane
recognizes that seniors and others in
residential living are lonely and her
dog brings love to them on his visits.
The two spend two days a week
visiting old friends and making new
ones across Huron County. Any dog
who is non-aggressive with
strangers can be certified for the
therapy dog program. Daisy’s gentle
and well-behaved manner was
obvious during their time with the
congregation and her friendliness
warmed the hearts of all present.

Interest had been expressed
recently regarding the beginning of
the club. Researcher Helen Dale had
some interesting facts to present to
the present-day group as found in
the archives of an area paper.
Myrtle Fairservice convened an
information meeting al the
Londesborough Hall on July 9,
1981. Representatives from seniors’
groups in Clinton and Blyth were on
hand to. offer their experience.
Coincidentally, on hand that
particular day to offer musical
entertainment were Barb Bosman
and her two daughters and Pat and
Mark Stackhouse. Shortly
thereafter, the caretaker of the hall,
Reg Lawson, was asked to book the
hall for the first and third Tuesdays
of each month for meetings. Each of
the 30 signed-up members paid $.50
at each gathering to maintain the
club.
The election of officers took place
on Aug. 4, 1981 and the slate was:
president, Elsie Shaddick; first vice-
president, Verna Glazier; secretary,
Jean Scott; treasurer, Margaret
Taylor; press secretary, Dora
Shobbrook.
The suggestion by pianist, Beth
Knox, to call the group the Happy
Gang Seniors was adopted Aug. 12.
Card playing was a staple part of
each meeting’s entertainment in
those early days with euchre and
cribbage being played as well as
bingo. For the first Christmas
meeting it was decided to have a
catered meal - that much is still the
same.

Ball game
Two-year-old Quaid Kerr of Blyth appears to be outrunning
Steve Cook to a loose ball during the Living Waters ball
game held Saturday evening at the Blyth ballpark. Actually,
little Quaid was playing by himself when a ball rolled past
him as players warmed up for the game. (Jim Brown photo)
