Roller skating For the first time in many years, roller skating was held at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre. Approximately 100 people took advantage of the event on Friday evening, with some getting out their own roller skates or rollerblades. Rentals were also available, (jim Brown photo) News from the Branch By Jo-Ann McDonald The last general meeting of the Legion year of 2004/2005 was held on Tuesday evening with nine members present. Topics included the ongoing financial difficulties of the Branch and whether to cut back on hours or other areas. The new executive will hold its first meeting on Tuesday, June 21 at 8 p.m. Brussels Cemetery decoration service was discussed. It will be held on June 26. Installation was held on Friday evening with a good crowd in attendance. The installing officers were Comrade Glenn Bridge for Brussels and Comrade Jim Watson for Seaforth. The new executive is: president, Norm Dobson; first vice- president, Jo-Ann McDonald; second vice-president, Allyson Cardiff; secretary, Sandra Josling; treasurer, Judy Lee; executive, Greg Wilson. Andy Overholt, Mabel Glanville, Julie Harrison, Mike Dauphin; Sergeant-at-Arms, Lisa Glanville. If you have any concerns or questions contact any executive member. The Friday night supper of roast pork was enjoyed by about 40 people. With the upcoming cemetery decoration service approaching, a reminder that the Legion headstone marker - a red poppy on white with lettering We Will Remember Them is available free of charge to the families for the headstone of a veteran. The marker may be purchased for a nominal charge of $5 for other Legion members’ headstones. Drop into the Branch to acquire one if you would like one for a headstone. The fish fry held on Saturday was a sell out. Apologies to those we were unable to feed and our promise that it won’t happen again. The Cadet Corps held its year-end camping trip to Tobermory on the weekend with 16 cadets and three officers enjoying the time away. The warm weather seems to put the pressure on for multiple choices of things to do and places to go. The Red Hat Ladies were out on Thursday for a spaghetti feast and then on to the Soundsation Celebration. Quite a sight - 28 lovelies in a full red hat garb. It’s rather fun to see the gloves, hats and various articles of dress with this crew. The show was a great finale to a fun evening. The theme for the show as in celebration of 15 years of offering great entertainment to the area. Well done once again Soundsation. The streets were pretty busy on Saturday with folks seeking treasures at the annual village garage sale. Lots of good stuff to recycled and is now ready to take on another life in a different house. Good job. London Conference of the United Church of Canada met over the weekend to celebrate and do the business of the church. On Sunday the worship services for Brussels and Ethel United Church moved to London where the members joined about L000 other folks in a very special day. Sunday was the Celebration of Ministry for eight successful students. This was the service that Nancy Corrigan (Betty Gowing’s daughter) and Joan Golden have been working towards for the past five years. Joan will be serving in St. Thomas and Nancy is heading to New Brunswick. Both of these new ministries begin in July. Well done and congratulations to you both. A reception will be held in the United Church on June 19 for you to say best wishes and goodbye to Joan and Richard. We know the community will miss Ophelia and her owners on the village streets so take this opportunity to tell them you’ll miss them that day between I and ‘3 p.m. There are some good ball and soccer games being played in the village. Morning Star Rebekah Lodge held its regular meeting. The charter was draped in memory of six deceased assembly officers. Sister's Jane Hall and Elva Brown attended the Inaugural meeting on Monday, May 16. Sister Shirley Cooper of Pride of Huron Lodge, Exeter was installed as District Deputy President for Huron-Perth District 23. The President of Rebekah Assembly of Ontario for 2005-2006 is Sister Jean Clark whose project is juvenile diabetes. ' %-f- s' NEWS FROM BRUSSELS The Rebekahs and Oddfellows will worship at Melville Presbyterian Church on Sunday, June 5 and invite the congregation to join them for lunch following the service.
