Goderich Y to offer special
program for older adults
Better late than ...
‘"Use it or lose it’ isn’t just a
saying - it’s a sure thing. And it’s
never too late unless you don’t start
now.” says Carolyn Parks, local
NCCP coach, author and athlete.
’ “The Goderich YMCA is
launching an exercise program for
adults over 55, especially targeting
those who may not have done much
in the way of workouts before. We’re
encouraging people to get off the
couch and get into fitness.”
Starting Now - Just for the Health
of It will run from June 6 to Aug. 12.
“1 guess I always wanted to flame
out, rather than rust out,” says Parks
with a smile.
“While a daily walk is a good
thing,” Parks goes on, “it doesn’t
address the loss of muscle mass and
hence, strength as we age.
Resistance and strength training
does. Balance and mobility are
improved with core exercises, and
cardio work increases heart function
and breathing. I think exercise is the
closest thing we’ve got to a panacea
for many human ailments. Besides
helping the body, it lifts the spirits,
improves outlook, and maintains
mental acuity - while at the same
time, exercise can reduce blood
pressure and lower cholesterol
levels.”
“I was raised by my grandparents
for half my childhood,” states Parks,
Rough contest for U-ll squad

“and have always felt a connection
to older folk, along with the concern
that they not be the ‘forgotten
generation’ in a society obsessed
with youth. A special program in a
private area will do much to
encourage mature adults with
experienced bodies to develop a
routine of self-care through exercise.
I’m not 30 anymore and I can relate
to what happens as we age. Helping
others be the best they can be, at
whatever age, has always been
important to me.”
The Y’s wellness director, Mike
Agnew, agrees. “Several of our
members have been requesting a
program designed for older adults,"
he says, “and we’re pleased to
provide this. Carolyn will be an
inspiration to participants. She’
someone who is in midlife but has
remained fit. She’ll encourage others
to improve their health and fitness
levels - and have fun doing it.”
