The Blyth Horticultural Society
held its spring invitational meeting
May 9 at Memorial Hall with
approximately 45 people in
attendance including visitors from
the Brussels, Goderich, Auburn and
Wingham societies.
Anne Elliott, president, opened the
meeting with a warm welcome to
everyone. She told about the
unveiling of the plaque that the
Blyth Horticultural Society along
with Blyth United Church installed
at the Horticultural Park on Dinsley
Technical night
There was a computer showcase, a Multi-Media Festival on

Street last fall.
The Blyth Horticultural Society
continues to beautify the park, as
well as the butterfly garden, the
flowerbeds at the Blyth entrance,
cemetery, parking lot planters, boxes
along main street and all the hanging
planters.
Betty Battye gave a report on the
Ontario Horticultural Association,
District 8 at Tara, April 24.
There will be d new postage stamp
next year
the 100th
the Ontario
coming out
commemorating
anniversary of
Horticultural Association.
Special guest was Sylvia Nonkes
of Spring Breezes Greenhouses. She
passed around several new perennial
plants that are out. She read the
many benefits you can get from
gardening.
“Three out of every four
Canadians are into gardening
making it the second most popular
exercise, second only to walking.
Women 50 and older who garden at
least once a week have a higher bone
density than those who jog, walk,
etc.
There is a whole field or practice
called “horticultural therapy” which
explores the way gardening helps
people heal physically and
emotionally.
The article went on to say that
gardening can offer a great return in
investment. A Gallop poll found that
landscaping adds seven to 15 per
cent to a home’s value.
A study in British Columbia by the
Canadian Horticultural Therapy
Association looked at the impact of
gardens at residence for Alzheimer’s
patients.
The number of violent incidents
declined by 19 per cent over two
years at those residences with
gardens but rose to 80 per cent at
residences with no gardens.
Special musical entertainment was
by Cappy Onn and Emily Nicholson
playing their violins. Among the
numbers was toe tappin’ music from
the play Spirit of the Narrows, a
Blyth Festival production featuring
Onn. This production is returning for
the 2005 season having premiered at
Blyth in 2004.
The enjoyable evening concluded
with lunch and door prizes.
