advisory
Health Canada is reminding
parents ;and caregivers that infants
placed in bath seats or bath rings,
which are emerged in any depth of
water, must be constantly supervised
with undivided attention by a
competent adult.
Infant bath seats and bath rings are
products designed to support infants
in an upright position in the bathtub,
and usually consist of a plastic seat
or ring. Suction cups are often
employed to hold the product in
place, however, newer models use
an arm that attaches to the side of the
bathtub instead.
The expected age range for the use
of these products is from six to nine
months, representing the time frame
in which an infant can sit unassisted,
until the time when they can pull
themselves to a standing position.
In 2004. Health Canada was made
aware of three separate fatal
incidents - of which one drowning
was linked to the use of a bath ring
and two deaths to the use of bath
seats. Since 1991. the Department
has received 11 reports of drowning
deaths linked to these products with
nine occurring in the last five years.
Additionally, 20 near-drowning
incidents have been reported since
1983.
In most cases, drownings and
other incidents linked to bath seats
and bath rings occur as a result of:
• the product becoming unstable
and tipping over in the bath.
• the infant climbing out of the
product, or ' - '
• the infant slipping through one of
the leg 'openings and becoming
lodged under water.
Some ftiodels of infant bath seats
and bath rings carry warning labels
that state “prevent drowning - never
leave child unattended” while other
models bear a warning that states
/'prevent drowning - always keep
baby within arm’s reach.” Despite
these warnings, in most reported
incidents, the infant had been left
unattended or under inadequate
supervision. Health Canada is
currently undertaking additional
research and, based upon the
findings of these initiatives, will put
in place appropriate risk
management measures if necessary.
For further information or to
report an incident, contact the
Health Canada Product Safety
Office at 1-866-662-0666.

HE supports program
By a 7-5 margin, Huron East
council voted to support the request
from the economic development
committee for some financial
assistance for its Doors Open
program.
The program is sponsored by the
Ontario Heritage Foundation and
has done a superb job for other
towns in attracting visitors through
the celebration of their past.
Committee director Ralph
Laviolette said they were to get
7,000 brochures from the province,
paid as part of the program, to be
distributed to key spots throughout
the municipality. The provincial
brochures highlight the events to
occur across the province this
summer and include the 20 sites
nominated in Brussels and Seaforth.
Events are planned on July 31 and
Aug. 1 in Seaforth and area and June
19 and Aug. 20 in Brussels and area.
Laviolette reported they were in
the process of preparing their own
brochure which would expand on
the stories about the first 20 sites and
would also include the outlying

past and present, to visitors this
summer and in years to come.
“If we don't promote our area,
who will?” queried councillor Joe

Mayor Joe Seili said he felt
strongly for the program.
Councillor Larry McGrath said he
supports the group because they had
a budget of $88,000 and came in

Ben Lobb of Holmesville will represent
the Conservative Party in Huron-Bruce in
the next, anticipated federal election that
many analysts suggest will happen sooner
rather than later.
Lobb, a graduate of Central Huron
Secondary School, employee at Wescast
Industries and family auctioneer was the
fourth ballot choice of over 300 assembled
party faithful in what was a hotly-contested
rape,
During his speech, Lobb drove home the
importance of integrity and accountability a
government must have in order to win the
confidence of local voters.
“During the past 12 years we’ve seen
boondoggle after scandal that costs our
country and our riding billions while the
latest sponsorship scandal deepens further
by the day.” said Lobb. “Citizens of Huron-
Bruce deserve much better and they’ll get
that in me and the Conservative Party.”
