The Citizen Please Recycle vj#' This Newspaper Huron County’s hopes of being named a cultural capital of Canada and qualifying for a grant were not successful for the current year. In a letter from Heritage Canada the county was praised for its strong rural identity, the Huron County Museum and its art bank collection, but the agency found more to fault than praise. The county was faulted for a low municipal investment in the arts compared to other municipalities of comparable size, with most of that money going to the museum. The agency also recommended the county adopt a cultural plan. “The integration of arts and culture into overall sustainable planning and legacy activities would need to be further addressed in any future application,” it said. *** Tenders have been awarded to Lavis Contracting Ltd. for $509,882.92 for rehabilitation of Londesborough Line, County Rd. 15 and 31. The work had originally been scheduled for last year but was deleted from the budget at that time. *** Household hazardous waste collection depots will be set up on Aug. 27 in Goderich, Sept. 10 in Seaforth and Sept. 24 in Wingham. Each depot will be located at the local municipal works yard and will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. *** Sick time among emergency service personnel is down by 184.4 hours for the first two months of 2005. Projecting that total ahead for the entire year, it still means that the average sick time per employee will be nearly 62 hours. *** Circulation of materials through the Brussels and Blyth libraries showed a substantial jump for the first three months of 2005. The number of loans from the Brussels library increased 27 per cent over the same period last year. Blyth increased its circulation by 10 per cent. Blyth still circulated considerably more materials at 2,962 compared to 2,232 at Brussels. Top lending libraries among the smaller, village libraries are Zurich, 4,617; Bayfield, 3,226 and Hensail, 3,222. Despite the gains in circulation at the smaller libraries, overall circulation was down slightly across the system. Circulation at Goderich dropped 10 per cent although hours have been extended at that branch.
