Child Find Ontario announces campaign Over 67,000 cases of missing children were reported in Canada last year, 34 per cent of those cases, nearly 23.000 children and teenagers were recorded in Ontario. Child Find Ontario’s 14th annual Green Ribbon of Hope Campaign takes place during the month of May, to bring public attention to the issue of missing children and the need to educate families and children about safety. May 25 is National Missing Children’s Day in Cana da. More than 75 per cent of the cases of missing children reported on RCMP’s Missing Children Registry are runaway or “throwaway” pre- teens and teenagers, and statistics now indicate that one in seven teenagers will run away from home - most of them girls, and most often in the 15-year old age range. While abduction is not the most frequent cause of a missing child, a young child is 10 times more likely to be abducted by an estranged parent than by a stranger. Chilo Find Ontario, with local chapters and hundreds of volunteers across the province, helps in the search for missing children, offers support to families going through the trauma of a missing son or daughter, and works to educate families, the public and communities about personal safety for children and teens. The Green Ribbon symbol was granted exclusively to Child Find following the Green Ribbon Task Force investigation into missing high school student Kristen French. Volunteers across the country will be distributing green ribbons as a symbol of hope for all missing children. Last year, thousands of Ontario citizens wore green ribbons during the month of May in support of missing children and child safety. Child Find Ontario urges people across the province to support the Green Ribbon of Hope Campaign by wearing a green ribbon. To obtain green ribbon display boxes for your school, organization or business, or for more information, contact Child Find Ontario at 1-866-KID TIPS (543- 8477) (head office) or your local chapter of Child Find office.
