Letter to the editor Nurses plan events for Nurses’ Week THE EDITOR, Nursing Week is May 9-15 this year and is celebrated each year throughout Canada during the week which falls on Florence Nightingale’s Letter May 12 birthday. It is a time to recognize the year-round dedication and achievements of registered nurses and registered practical nurses. Nurses advocate for patients and deliver safe, quality care. This year’s theme is Nurses - Trusted, Vital, Professionals. United in Caring. Throughout Nursing Week, nurses will participate in events and gatherings that honour and celebrate the accomplishments of Ontario’s tens of thousands of nurses. Nurses work in a variety of settings - hospital, nursing home, home care, Writer seeks continued THE EDITOR, Your articles in last week’s paper about my sister, Shirley, and our efforts to save her ‘home’ at Huronlea Regional Center (HRC) at Orillia were great. I’ve heard excellent comments and a lot of interest has been created. Thanks for your research, your time and a job well done. I would just like to correct an error in the website. It should read www.savehuronia.center, com My sisters, Marion and Shirley, and I are grateful to you and the community for all your support and efforts to help save HRC. Facility focal point Continued from page 1 Optimist Clubs made donations and a pitching machine was donated. The committee repaid its half of the costs by 2000. The new facility was one of the focal points of Grey Twp. 140th anniversary celebrations. Outfield fencing was installed in 1999 at a material cost of $2,560 plus volunteer labour. The lights were installed at a cost of $16,200 in 2000. This cost was again split 50-50 between the committee and the township, with the committee’s share being repaid by 2004. The poles for the lights were donated. The final phase of fencing was completed at a cost of $1,850, paid for by the committee. During the initial five years of the committee, over $50,000 was spent on major upgrades to the park, half of which was funded by the township and half by the fundraising efforts of the committee. The labour and maintenance was done solely by community volunteers. Since 2000, the committee has continued to fund park and building maintenance, including stone dust, new bleachers picnic tables, a freezer/cooler, replacement of the fridge, as well as ball equipment and uniforms. Ethel has six minor ball teams this year, about 75 children, a women’s team and a men’s team. The park is rented out for reunions. Three outside ball teams have inquired or have already booked the park for playing time this season and three tournaments have already been booked. The group has $9,000 on hand and is planning an extension to the pavilion as well as replacing some ball equipment. When asked by councillor Joe Steffler if they realized a Trillium grant was available they said they didn’t. Councillor Mark Beaven said he felt it was a good idea, but stressed that council should stick to its 2005 budget, as this would be an unbudgeted item. Councillor Alvin McLellan said they should support the request one way or another. Jane Stewart asked if they could get a $15,000 loan from council and then pay it back over a three or four- year period. Deputy-mayor Bernie MacLellan said he was in favour of giving money to any group if they are willing to pay it back. However, he added he felt the money in the Grey Twp. trust could be used for this project. “I'm just scared of committing taxpayers’ money to this group, especially when there are similar groups in Seaforth, Brussels and other areas of the municipality,” said Please keep signing petitions at the Brussels Variety or the E-petition. Keep sending letters to the Hon. Sandra Pupa- tello. Minister of Community and Social Services and Carol Mitchell MPP to get this action re assessed. We hope the Rally at Queen’s Park of 140th councillor Frank Stretton. Beaven said the group should be commended for the work they’ve done in the past and felt they should be given an interest-free loan of up to $15,000 for the improvements to the Ethel ballpark and then repay the loan over three years. “I can’t vote for this motion, not when the taxes for the McKillop Twp. residents are going up 10 per cent,” said councillor Sharon McClure. When asked if they could wait until next year to find out how much of a Trillium grant they would receive, the four-member delegation unanimously felt they would rather get the project done this year. “We are having our 150th in 2006 and we would like it done before then,” said Stewart. A motion to provide the group with a $15,000 interest-free loan passed by an 8-3 margin. support on Wednesday, May 11 will make a difference. My contact number is 887-8860. With thanks, Barb Fritz. public health, industry - take a moment to thank one. This is also an opportunity to increase awareness of the public and government officials of nurses' contributions to the well-being of Canadians. Send a strong message to your local MPP to keep up the pressure for the Ontario government to end staffing shortages, to improve working conditions and to respect and value nurses for their ongoing professionalism and dedication. So thank Ontario’s nurses - RN or RPN - for their professionalism and commitments to excellence in nursing practice.
