Every year, garage sales are held
in neighbourhoods across Canada.
People often shop for bargains at
these sales. However, these bargains
could be dangerous.
Every year in Canada, more than
5,000 children under the age of five
are injured from using children’s
products that are unsafe. Some older
products have caused deaths and
have been taken off the market, but
these dangerous products can still be
found at garage sales.
Be careful about used products
when planning your garage sale.
Everyone holding a garage sale is
legally responsible for ensuring that
products sold, whether new or
used are safe and meet safety
standards.
It is illegal to sell the following
products if safety standards are not
being met: cribs and cradles, car
seats and booster seats, strollers,
playpens and baby gates, children’s

protectors, toys and toy boxes and
lawn darts.
Not all products are regulated,
including baby walkers, children’s
clothing with drawstrings, bunk
beds, and baby bath seats. These
unregulated products could pose a
hazard to children.
Also, it is important to only sell
items that are in good condition. To
ensure that you only handle safe
products, be well informed; know
which products are regulated and
ensure that all safety standards are
met.
Follow these guidelines to protect
yourself and your children from
garage sale purchases:
• Know where the product was
originally purchased.
• Do not sell or purchase products
that have been recalled or that
won’t meet safety standards.
• Ensure all parts are present, in
good repair, and functioning
properly.
• Make sure assembly instructions
and/or instructions for use are
provided.
• If you are unsure whether a
product is safe, or whether it
complies with the legislation, don’t
sell it and don't give it away.
Destroy it and then throw it away.

Remember, if you are unsure
whether a product is safe or if it
complies with the law, don’t sell it.
don’t give it away, and don't buy it.
Most importantly, don’t use it with a
child.
