(Jim Brown photo) with some technical work on the the By Jim Brown Citizen staff Fifty-five secondary school students from throughout western Ontario took part in Imago, held this past Friday and Saturday at Central Huron Secondary School in Clinton. This was the fourth student film festival and learning symposium put on by the drama department of the Clinton high school. Drama teacher Stephen Oliver indicated that students attending this year’s event came from Clinton, Wingham, Exeter, Goderich, Stratford, Owen Sound, Kitchener- Waterloo and London. He indicated many of instructors at this year’s Imago are former participants and as well as being graduates of CHSS. Two of the instructors are from the Blyth area - Trent Richmond of the immediate Blyth area and Brent Radford from Londesborough. The event has blossomed since its beginning. Oliver said it started as a Saturday-afternoon event, but now the participants are kept busy during two long days. “You could see the energy of the students and their excitement, the more they became involved,” he said. With the instructors returning on an annual basis it provides continuity. Oliver said, it’s great that some of the participants are now the instructors. A number of student films were also submitted this year. They were created as opening title sequences for a much longer and larger film. They were The Amulet by Erik Greensmith of St. Mary’s High School in Owen Sound, Blind Spot by Dan Goldberg of Oakridge Secondary School in London, Conversations About Animus Nexus by Mike Yeo and Jentje Steenbeek of CHSS in Clinton, The Day of the Wooden Spoon by Matthew Miner of South Huron District High School in Exeter, Mango Phil by Michael Gingerich of CHSS and Panama by Sam Sholdice and Dave Falconer of CHSS. During the two-day event students, divided into two groups, were to shoot commercial for Fragrance. Jordan Baker, individuals who responsible for the vision and organization of the event, indicated there was one done to signify a high budget and another was a low- budget commercial. They were previewed Saturday evening. Richmond of the immediate Blyth area was a graduate of the CHSS digital studies class and after graduating from Sheridan College’s a 30-second Imago: The one of the 10 were entirely media arts program, began working for Sound Dogs Toronto during the summer of 2000. He has since worked on a number of major projects for Miramax, New Line and Alliance/Atlantis. He has also edited documentaries for the National Film Board (NFB), CBC and TVO. Richmond has instructed at Imago since the program began four years ago. He recently worked on Assault on Precinct 13, Land of the Dead and Resident Evil 2. “Mr. Oliver was responsible for kick-starting my interest in film, and after attending the first Imago event, I am now able to give something back,” said Richmond. He noted it was interesting watching the students as they used his sound equipment. “The expressions on their faces was something else,” he said. Radford, who grew up in Londesborough and played minor hockey in Blyth, has just completed his second year at Concordia University in Montreal, majoring in film production. He graduated from the television broadcasting technology and journalism program at Loyalist College. He has worked for a casting agency, several special effects companies in Montreal and has even found time to write and shoot his own short films. He has also worked on some music videos. Radford has lent his considerable talents and energy to Imago since year one. He was teaching the participants how to use a storyboard in order to get the different pieces of film put together in the proper sequence. He was showing them the proper method by using a comic book and showing how the story Hows with each sequence. Radford was demonstrating how storyboards were done for each commercial and how animation could be added. “Everything is then edited together,” he said. Another Imago alumnus is Andreas Mendritzki from the Petrolia area. Although he is not from this area, he attended Imago both as a participant and as a student at Central Lambton Collegiate Institute. They can also help the participants with some leads for employment.
