Fifty-five secondary school
students from throughout western
Ontario took part in Imago, held this
past Friday and Saturday at Central
Huron Secondary School in Clinton.
This was the fourth student film
festival and learning symposium put
on by the drama department of the
Clinton high school.
Drama teacher Stephen Oliver
indicated that students attending this
year’s event came from Clinton,
Wingham, Exeter, Goderich,
Stratford, Owen Sound, Kitchener-
Waterloo and London.
He indicated many of
instructors at this year’s Imago are
former participants and as well as
being graduates of CHSS. Two of
the instructors are from the Blyth
area - Trent Richmond of the
immediate Blyth area and Brent
Radford from Londesborough.
The event has blossomed since its
beginning. Oliver said it started as a
Saturday-afternoon event, but now
the participants are kept busy during
two long days.
“You could see the energy of the
students and their excitement, the
more they became involved,” he
said.
With the instructors returning on
an annual basis it provides
continuity. Oliver said, it’s great that
some of the participants are now the
instructors.

A number of student films were
also submitted this year. They were
created as opening title sequences
for a much longer and larger film.
They were The Amulet by Erik
Greensmith of St. Mary’s High
School in Owen Sound, Blind Spot
by Dan Goldberg of Oakridge
Secondary School in London,
Conversations About Animus Nexus
by Mike Yeo and Jentje Steenbeek of

During the two-day event
students, divided into two groups,

media arts program, began working
for Sound Dogs Toronto during the
summer of 2000. He has since
worked on a number of major
projects for Miramax, New Line and
Alliance/Atlantis. He has also edited
documentaries for the National Film
Board (NFB), CBC and TVO.
Richmond has instructed at Imago
since the program began four years
ago.
He recently worked on Assault on
Precinct 13, Land of the Dead and
Resident Evil 2.
“Mr. Oliver was responsible for
kick-starting my interest in film, and
after attending the first Imago event,
I am now able to give something
back,” said Richmond.
He noted it was interesting
watching the students as they used
his sound equipment.
“The expressions on their faces
was something else,” he said.
Radford, who grew up in
Londesborough and played minor
hockey in Blyth, has just completed
his second year at Concordia
University in Montreal, majoring in
film production. He graduated from
the television broadcasting
technology and journalism program
at Loyalist College.
He has worked for a casting
agency, several special effects
companies in Montreal and has even
found time to write and shoot his
own short films. He has also worked
on some music videos.
Radford has lent his considerable
talents and energy to Imago since
year one.
He was teaching the participants
how to use a storyboard in order to
get the different pieces of film put
together in the proper sequence.
He was showing them the proper
method by using a comic book and
showing how the story Hows with
each sequence. Radford was
demonstrating how storyboards were
done for each commercial and how
animation could be added.
“Everything is then edited
together,” he said.
Another Imago alumnus is
Andreas Mendritzki from the
Petrolia area. Although he is not
from this area, he attended Imago
both as a participant and as a student
at Central Lambton Collegiate
Institute.
He just completed his first year of
fdm school at Concordia University,
This is his third year of involvement.
