PEOPLE AROUND
AUBURN
Happy spring everyone. Now if
we could have seen this last week’s
snow coming, we would have
ordered a second cup of tea, as we
weren’t going anywhere anyway.
The folks around Auburn have
been pretty busy and I’ll start off
with congratulations to Catherine
Robinson who completed her first
year at University of Waterloo in
chemical engineering. She has been
hired by Cambridge Materials
Testing for the summer and then will
return to her studies in the fall.
Some people from Auburn
attended the Scott Woods concert on
Friday evening at Goderich Legion.
He was twice named the Canadian
Fiddle Chan pion and he had
everyone tapping their toes
throughout the night. He ended the
concert by playing the Orange
Blossom Special using not only his
bow but among other things, a coat
hanger and plunger if you can
imagine. I couldn t make my coat
hanger sing if I spotted it a cup of tea
and a middle ‘c’.
Gerald and Carol McDowell are
welcoming their granddaughter
Michelle McDowell for the summer.
WI dines out before meeting
The members and guests of the
Auburn Women’s Institute met
Wednesday, April 20 at 12:30 p.m.
for dinner at Stickers restaurant. The
meeting followed at the Auburn
Community Hall. Marg Fraser
welcomed all and led in the Opening
Ode and Mary Stewart Collect. O
Canada was sung.
The minutes of the March meeting
were read by Tena Empey and the
treasurer report was give by Teresa
Roetcisoender.
Laura Mae Chamney informed
everyone about the cards she had
sent.
The roll call was the payment of
fees. The women were pleased to
welcome two new members Phyllis
Durst and Marg Siertsema.
Michelle is the daughter of Wayne
and Claire McDowell ofChatham.
Michelle is employed at the Falls
Reserve near Benmiller as a natural
resource interpreter. One of her
responsibilities will be to organize
children’s programmes.
Michelle has completed her third
year at University of Western
Ontario and has one more year to go.
Following her final year she is
headed to Teacher’s College.
Welcome to Auburn Michelle.
Jim and Grace Cartwright
attended a planning session in
Woodstock with the goal of
organizing a Collector’s Club for
Oliver tractors in Canada. It will be
called Goodison -Oliver Collection
named after John Goodison who first
imported the Oliver tractor to
Canada.
Mr. Goodison’s daughter lives in
Scarborough and gave the
committee support to start the Club
that will be the first one out of the
United States. Their goal is to have
their club recognized by 2007 when
they will be hosting a Collector
Club’s convention.
The Auburn Horticulture Society
is having its annual plant sale May
16 at 7 p.m. The doors will be
opened during the day to drop
off your offerings. Please be
generous.
The Society did a lot to pretty
things up for Auburn’s 150th and
this is a great chance for everyone to
show their appreciation. Shrubs,
perennials, seedlings, or do you have
an old garden gnome that doesn’t fit
in any more? You name it; they will
The new fridge and microwave

All our Dungannon neighbours are
sprucing up for Thursday’s meeting
with the Huron County Historical
Society. Society members will learn
about Dungannon’s beginnings and
anyone attending will also get an
update from Celebrations chair
Duane Rivett on the progress for this
summer’s festivities.
Everyone is invited and a show of
support would be much appreciated
for both groups. Refreshments will
be served. Agricultural Hall doors
will open April 28 at 7:30 p.m. The
meeting starts at 8 p.m.
A pavilion is being erected at the
Auburn Lion’s Park along the
riverbank. It is just in the beginning
stages but you can feel the
excitement already. This will be
perfect for picnics and family
gatherings.
It will offer shelter from sun and
rain or even vindictive birds. It will
be a great place for folks to meet and
greet three seasons out of four. It
will be a wonderful addition to the
park and the community.
Well done Lions. One more roar to
add to your accomplishments.
Knox UCW met in the church
basement on Monday evening with
the theme being springtime. The
evening was hosted by Marg Bakker,
Teresa Roetcisoender and Shirley
Andrews. The theme put us in the
mood for a return to more gentle
weather.
Knox welcomed Rev. Pat Cook
back from her holidays. Her Sunday'
message was Keeping The
Faith.

Since Huron East has joined the
Guelph area it has caused a concern
with funding for the scholarship. It is
hoped this can be solved at a later
date.
The new president Mrs.
Cartwright convened and new
business was discussed. It was
agreed to cater to a Lions function
Oct. 15 for 120-130 people.
The Huron West District annual is
to be held at Belgrave May 30.
Registration is at 9:45 a.m.
The rally is Oct. 3 and the
convention is Oct. 4.
4-H attends
beach party
By Sophie Jefferson
The Manner Maniacs finished
their club. Putting Your Best Foot
Forward, with two events. On April
3, they practised their manners by
serving at the Auburn Lions
pancake breakfast, and on April 17
they had a beach party in St.
Augustine for their friends.
At the beach party, the members
and their guests swam in the
Robinsons’ pool, then met back at
St. Augustine church for games,
which were planned by Ellen and
Reba Jefferson.
After a few rounds of Capture the
Flag, it was time to go, but everyone
had fun getting warmed up for the
beach weather.
The members would like to
recommend attending the pancake
breakfast in Auburn. All of the food
you get is good, and you get a lot.
The next one is on May 7, but the
doors don’t open until nine, as it is
yard sale Saturday in Auburn and St.
Augustine. St. Augustine’s will be a
multiple-family event, and
Wawanosh 4-H is having a bake
table also. It opens at 7 a.m.
