Sports Brussels Minor Soccer moves west At the annual spring meeting of Brussels Minor Soccer, it was voted unanimously to join the North Huron Soccer League. Previously, Brussels had been in an alliance with the North Perth Soccer League. This western move will allow Brussels soccer players the opportunity to experience a different calibre of competition, play in tournaments other than just the year-ends, and to play against their friends they meet in the hockey season. As well, the North Huron League offers U-18 instead of U-17, giving older players the chance to play all through high school. Teams will play against others from Seaforth, Blyth, Wingham, Lucknow, Clinton, Goderich and St. Columban. Registration numbers have been maintained so that each co-ed level will be represented including U-9, U-ll, U-13, U-15 and now U-18. With the move, the nights of soccer will change. Mondays will be U-18, Tuesdays are U-ll, Wednesdays are U-9 and U-15 and Thursdays are U-13. All home games are played behind the arena, beginning at 7 p.m. Coaches will be calling their players within the next week to start practices. Games start the week of May 9. Younger players, ages four to seven, will be divided into a junior and a senior houseleague format. This new format for the younger players will allow for the little guys, who are just starting out, a better chance to hone their skills and shine, while the senior houseler ^ue will provide a higher calibre of competition amongst the players’ peers. Junior houseleague will be on Tuesday nights and senior houseleague will be on Wednesday nights, starting the week of May 16. Registrations are still being accepted for houseleague-age players by calling Roz Schlosser at 887-9522. Refs are still needed for all groups and more information can be obtained from ref-in-chief, Abi Corbett by calling 887-6621. Coach Jack Mali said the team has about 12 players back from last year’s team which finished the regdar season in second place. However, he added they did lose some good players from last year’s team. After opening the scoring against the Panthers, South Huron was awarded a questionable penalty shot and they scored to even the score. Madill had some excellent chances late in the contest, but were just unable to get the ball into the net past a defensive wall. The Madill Coach said South Huron always has a strong team.
