Canvassers still on job in Cranbrook
Cancer month is ending this week
with a few more special events.
Some canvassers in the area have
finished knocking on doors in the
community and others are still on
the job.
On Thursday evening the Majestic
Women’s Institute is holding its
annual casserole supper and euchre
in the Brussels Library at 6:30 p.m.
with the proceeds going to the
Cancer Society.
On Friday evening at the Elma-
Logan arena a former Cranbrook
girl, Gayle (Engel) Dewer is doing a
unique thing along with Tom
Goodyer as part of a Second Chance
cancer’ fundraising dance and
auction.
As their grandson, Corbyn has
battled a rare form of cancer called
neuroblastoma since he was a few
weeks old, Gayle and Tom are
having their heads shaved to raise
money for cancer.
We wish them much success in
their fundraising.
Many Cranbrook and area
residents enjoyed the chicken supper
prepared at JR’s and served at the
BMG auditorium on Wednesday
evening. The Oddfellows Lodge
hosted the- dinner, draws and
entertainment.
Before and after the meal many
toes were tapping to the music of
singer, songwriter and recording
artist, Kiley Joe Masson from
Ingersoll.
Many people enjoyed eating out
again on Sunday evening at the
springtime supper at Melville
Presbyterian Church. With the
bright daffodils "on the tables it was
spring-like inside but not outside.
Ross and Betty Knight are
scheduled back from Florida this
week as the snow continues.
On Sunday morning Sean
Mitchell played his violin in
Cranbrook Presbyterian Church
accompanied by Madelene Steiss on
the piano. Ed Tollenaar was the
guest speaker, showing slides from
his trip to Africa in connection with
the Food Grains Bank. The need in
Africa for water and help with AIDS
is very important for us to remember
in our givings.
Leslie and Yvonne Knight spent a
couple of days in Richmond Hill this
week as their grandson, Will was
celebrating his sixth birthday.
There was much bicycling on the
roads in the area this week as the
young people spent time visiting
each other for recreation as they
were trying to go without watching
TV for the week.
On Saturday there were two auto
accidents, about a mile apart on the
Newry Road as people had problems
in the snow.
Happy . birthday to Peter
Workman and Emily Baker, April
27; Betty McCutcheon and Harry
Smith, April 30; Warren Knight,
May 1; Dean Bentley, May 2;

Welcome home to many of our
college and university students. The
stress of exams and now the waiting
for either graduation or to receive
acceptance to continue their
education keeps them on the edge.
Some are starting new summer
jobs, some returning to the same
summer employment and some are
beginning their chosen careers.
Congratulations to all arid good luck.
It was coffee and birthday cake
time for Walton Inn’s favourite
waitress Patti Banks. An angel food
birthday cake, supplied by Kathleen
Williamson, was enjoyed by the
morning coffee group which included
Marie Coutts, Audrey Hackwell,
Helen Williamson, Mary Humphries,
Leona McDonald, Jeanne Kirkby,
Marjorie Fraser and Kathleen. The
cake was also shared with Chris and
Judy Lee, Heidi McClure and Jo-Ann
McDonald.
It was off to Hanover and the Grey
Bruce Singers 25th anniversary
concert entitled Remember When for
some iocal people. Joining Leona
McDonald for the Friday evening

performance of a play entitled What’s
Wrong With You earlier this month.

It was dealt with how parents have
difficulty talking to teens about
relationships, behaviours and abuse.

will show slides of his and Marie's
trip to Africa.
Shannon Craig’s bridal shower has
been set for Friday. May 13 at 8 p.m.
The rotten weather on the weekend
caused many problems. Our own
daughter Kelly was a victim of the
slushy snow and ended up in the
ditch.
As is characteristic of our small
town community, almost every car
that came by stopped to see if they
could assist.
Thankfully, there were no injuries

came up big recently at Flashdance, a competition in
Barrie. Mackenzie Fulton, nine, of Mount Carmel, left, and
Mackenzie Chalmers, seven, of Blyth, won first place
honours in the duet/trio recreational jazz and tap category.
Both girls have been dancing for about five years. Instructor
Sheree Read said the dance school had 86 dancers at
Flashdance and they put in an abundance of time and
energy practising for competitions. The Jo Read team starts
competing in March and holds their finals in May, travelling
all over southwestern Ontario. The team’s next major
competition is this weekend in London. (Scott Nixon/Exeter Times
