New exercise centre for Huron County seniors Seniors in Clinton and Huron County who want to improve their health and fitness will soon have exciting new opportunities. Town and Country Support Services (TCSS) is working this year to open a new state-of-the art seniors’ fitness centre at the Betty Cardno Centre in Clinton. TCSS which oversees programs at the Betty Cardno Centre, has been awarded a $16,000 grant to develop the new seniors’ fitness centre. The funding is one of the first Communities in Action grants to be given by the Ontario Ministry of Tourism and Recreation in an initiative to increase the activity levels of community members. “This is a very exciting project for us,” says Cheryl Phillips, TCSS community support co-ordinator in Clinton, who is spearheading the program. “We run popular weekly seniors' exercise classes Clinton, Land swap provides Habitat By Stew Slater Special to The Citizen Students of St. Marys DCVI will have a Habitat for Humanity building site for a neighbour, thanks to a land swap agreement between the Town of St. Marys and the Avon Maitland District School Board. At a regular meeting Tuesday, Brussels, Blyth, Wingham, Exeter and Zurich. This new funding will allow us to take fitness programs to the next level.” The $16,000 will be used to purchase equipment for the centre, to include a treadmill, elliptical machine and a multi-gym weight machine. A recumbe.nt exercise machine has already been purchased, through funding received from the Central Huron Donation Fund. Phillips notes, “It’s very encouraging to have the support of the local municipality as well as the provincial government.” She explains that the Clinton Seniors’ Fitness Centre will be designed to be comfortable, inviting and definitely a “senior friendly” facility. There are also plans to offer seniors’ walking clubs and the First Step Program which is designed for those suffering from diabetes. April 12, Avon Maitland trustees agreed to return a 50' by 50’ parcel of land — originally granted by the town for the construction of the secondary school. The land is located off James Street South, between the DCVI student parking lot and an adjacent residential property. In return, the Town of St. Marys Phillips is working closely with the Canadian Centre for Activity and Aging and recently visited their London facility where she had the opportunity to speak with program participants. “I talked to several individuals in their 80s who had just finished the exercise portion of their class and were heading off to the fitness machines to work on their strength training. One 82-year-old lady said that she never thought she would be working out on a weight machine at her age, but since she began last year, she has noticed a real improvement in her walking ability and a reduction in joint pain as she suffers from osteoporosis.” Phillips notes, “This isn’t the usual age group that you associate with ‘working out at the gym,’ but we hope to change that.” “Town and Country believes that improving the health and well-being has agreed to provide drainage improvements at the southeast side of the school. The land will be used as a building site for Habitat for Humanity, a volunteer-based organization which assists those who don’t have the financial wherewithal to construct their own homes. of seniors improves their quality of life, and helps to keep seniors as active and vibrant members of the community,” she adds. A steering committee is being formed to provide community direction for these projects. Any community volunteer with an interest in being a part of this committee, or assisting with the exercise programs, is invited to call Phillips at Town and Country Support Services at 482-9264. John Maaskant, OFAC chair, said that the decision to purchase OPRAH marks a definite shift away from more traditional agricultural- awareness projects. Said Maaskant, “Research shows that more than 80 per cent of our consuming public aren’t interested in learning about agriculture or food. We do know, Town and Country Support Services is a leading not-for-profit health care agency that provides in- home care services and community programs to more than 3,000 older adults in Huron County. Walking, stretching and keeping muscles in good condition helps older adults to maintain their independence. Studies also show that modest physical activity - even less than once a week - can increase the longevity of people over 65. / though, that they like to be entertained. The new trend we are trying to capture is called edu tainment. Maaskant also noted that OPRAH’s informal debut at the Western Fair in early March was a real success. While there, she appeared on the New PL television and talked to many of the show’s visitors about farming. In 2004, OFAC displays were at 72 events reaching more than 2.3 million people with agriculture’s message. In 2005, OPRAH will visit many of these events including the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair and the Canadian National Exhibition to enhance OFAC’s already-successful educational initiatives.
