(Jim Brown photo) Crestwood Paddocks hoping to have annual event at new facility By Jim Brown Citizen staff The owners of Crestwood Paddocks and Equestrian Centre hope to have a number of clinics at its new facility on an annual basis. A new arena and stable has been built at the facility located about 12 kilometres east of Brussels on Newry Road Jim Knarr said the building of the facility began last September and was finished in January. “Although some minor work still has to be done, the facility can be used the way it is,” he said. The first of three clinics was held this past weekend at the new facility which features an 80 by 120 foot show arena. The clinics begin at 9 a.m. and continue to 5 p.m. or until the demonstrations are complete. “We are going to have problem horses so we can show the people how to solve the problem,” he said. One of the horses at the clinic this past weekend was an animal that was difficult to ride. It was a nice horse, but a person could just not ride it. Knarr said they hope to fix problems the clinic participants have with their horses. He said his wife, Jill, is more into horses than he is. She has been showing for the 15 years. “This facility has been something that we have planned for the past number of years,” said Jim Knarr. “We were just never able to progress with it. We just decided, now is the time.” Horses can be boarded at the establishment as they have 12 stalls available. They have four horses of their own. “People can keep the horses here for as long as they ATTENTION Contractors, Farmers, Welding Shops Do-It-Yourselfers You are invited to our OPEN HOUSE 0 TRADE SHOW Saturday April 30th from 9 am - 3 pm CFmtral Humy ' 286 HURON STREET CLINTON r*^’****^ want,” he said. Knarr said this location is ideal for the horses and equestrian centre. “We have 150 acres here and there are bush areas in a number of places,” he said. “We made our own trails. There are several miles of trails.” Although his wife favours English saddle competition, she does a variety of styles. Knarr said his wife was bom in England and was involved with horses before coming to Canada. “I got involved with horses when I met Jill, about 15 years ago,” he said. According to Knarr, they had owned as many as 12 horses at one time, but now they are down to four horses. “When we had six horses, we felt we had better get our own facilities,” he said. He said his wife puts a lot'of time into the horses and the same goes with the clinics she will be holding this year. “She knows what she is doing,” he said. As well as competing in English style events, she has also competed in Silver Saddle which is a western type of class. For the scheduled clinics, there is no maximum and no minimum number for participants, but if groups get too large, they may have to hold an additional clinic. People should bring their own tack to the clinics as they will be riding horses. Knarr said there used to be an annual horse event at a farm over on Hwy. 86, but it has not been held for a number of years. “We would like to hold an event of our own,” he said. “It may not be this year, but it is something we would like to hold in the future.” 10% off all orders that day ___ TOOLS • SALES • SERVICE We repair most Brand Name Power Tools Parts and Accessories 519-482-7930 • Fax 519-482-7463 THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, APRIL 21,2005. PAGE 9. • Costs remain the same The operation of summer recreation facilities is not as expensive as maintaining an arena in the winter for minor hockey and figure skating But, there are still costs involved. In the spring and summer, the main sports are minor softball and minor soccer, with a number of area players also competing on lacrosse teams in North Huron. In North Huron, which includes Bly th and Wingham, the rental rate for the softball fields is $10 per hour for adult leagues and $7 per hour for youth leagues. Director of recreation and facilities Dan Cousins also said there is a $5.50 per evening rate for the use of lights. He indicated the rates have remained the same since 2002. The registration for minor ball continues to decrease in North Huron due to the popularity of soccer and, for the past three years, lacrosse. Lacrosse is played at the North Huron Wescast community complex in Wingham as they have the nets and the 30-second clock. Local teams also use arenas in Listowel and Kurtzville. / The costs in Wingham have remained the same for the last three years, $36 per hour for adults and $31 per hour for youth teams. Cousins indicated the rental rates for the 2005-2006 winter season will not be finalized until June. For minor ball players in Brussels there is a $5 fee for the season to use the fields. Adults are charged $15 per game, and the fee is the same whether its fastball or slo-pitch. Rugby season underway The F. E. Madill Secondary School rugby teams opened their seasons with exhibition games last week. The senior and junior boys hosted their rivals from Kincardine District Secondary School and managed a split in games. The Senior Mustangs suffered a hard-fought 15-7 setback. TJ Marks scored the lone try for Madill and also added the convert. The Junior Mustangs battled in the first half and then ran away to a 20-5 win in the second half. A Tucker Dorscht scored a pair of tries for Madill, with single tries being scored by Mark Willits and Chase Chapman. CET MOWINC SALE!
