Greeting at Blyth United Church on Sunday, April 10 were Lois van Vliet and Joann MacDonald. The ushers were Karen Giousher, Emily Phillips, Lois van Vliet and Joann MacDonald. Pianist was Amanda Schwartzentruber. The children gathered at the front of the church during the singing of God Sees the Little Sparrow Fall. Tom Dunbar told the children about turkey vultures. They have no feathers on their heads and they eat dead animals. He told the children that they eat so much that they are unable to tly. When this happens they throw up and this also protects them from botulism. The children went downstairs for Sunday School. The Lectionary Reading from Acts 2: 42-47 was followed by the singing of the Responsive Psalm No. 23. Rev. Bannerman's message to the adults was Parable of Eagles and Parrots. When God was creating birds to fill the air, he decided to make the eagle and parrot first. He made ‘the eagle with a wide wingspan and special eyesight. God gave the parrot a small wingspan and bright colours and the gift to be able to repeat human sounds. They both have their value, though they seldom meet in the same place. It is interesting that the parrot is never mentioned in the Bible but the eagle shows up 23 times in 23 verses. In the book of Job, the eagle is the symbol of God’s mystery and power of nature. In Isaiah, the outstretched wings of eagles represent renewed energy given to those who have learned how to wait on God. Jessica Dunbar gave the Minute for Missions. Rev. Bannerman drew everyone’s attention to the announcements. Dates to remember are: May I, Rural Life Sunday, A tribute to Dr. Ken Jackson; May 8, Mother’s Day and Baptism and Church Membership. Huron Chapter is gearing up for the 11th Annual Big Bike Ride for Stroke. Fun and excitement are guaranteed with a bicycle built for 30. The Big Bike travels from coast to coast offering community teams the opportunity to have loads of fun while raising dollars for life-saving and life-changing Heart Disease and Stroke research and health promotion. The goal this year for Huron /Perth/Oxford is $100,000 to help in the fight against the leading cause of death in Canada. Huron County did an amazing job last year raising over $20,000. This year Seaforth is once again the host community on Wednesday, May 11. Huge advances have been made in stroke care. New drugs and therapies and area stroke centres like Stratford General Hospital are all examples of the results of the Foundation’s work. However keep in mind, of those who survive, only 29 per cent return to their normal lives and 71 per cent face disability. The cause is urgent and Big Bike is a fun and rewarding way to help. Time slots are filling rapidly, there’s always room for more. Cal) Keith Courtney, Big Bike ordinator 519-273-5212 register.
