A NOTE FROM BETTY

The sun is shining and the dust is
blowing. Farm equipment of every
kind and colour is busy on the land.
Meanwhile the bikes, skateboards
and skates are getting well used.
Rakes and shovels are in motion in
the village as the celebration of
spring causes great joy to all. Don’t
waste a moment of the sunshine for
I’m sure April showers are in the
offing.
The 17th Annual Dinner and
Auction for the Maitland
Conservation Foundation was a
success - and success can be judged
in many ways - financial, good will,
good food, good company, good
cause. By all those standards and
more, the evening was a roaring
success. Jeff and Cathy Cardiff and
able crew did their usual fine job.
Nothing like a full tummy to get you
in a good mood and quite
ready for the next part of
the evening. Wonderful donated
items were in abundance and
folks were more than ready to part
with their money to support the work
of the Foundation. Raffles, silent
auction, tickets, chances and
the regular auction with Dave
Johnston keeping everyone
entertained and alert made the
evening go quickly.
The Wawanosh Nature Centre is
the most obvious place for us to see
the work of the Foundation in action.
Over 9,000 folks will attend the
centre this year for conservation
education. So once again by
supporting this work our community
as well as many others along the
watershed of the Maitland benefit
from programs and events that
benefit our whole community
making it a better place to live.
You’re getting down to the wire,
so dig out your paper stubs and get
your income tax stubble in order.
Did you realize this is Organ
Donation Week - a time of
awareness for the great need for
organs. Kidney and liver transplants
are the most common but other
tissues and organs are also needed.
Just check with someone who has
been given a second chance at life
and you’ll see how important this is.
Be sure to sign the back of y,our
driver's licence and talk to your
family about the importance of this
issue. As Canadians we need to
improve our donation rate. Our
country is very low in participation
so use this week to find out why we
are reluctant to sign up for this life
giving cause.
i The Presbyterians asked me to
remind you to get your tickets for
their Spring Fundraising Dinner on
April 24. Check the ads and get your
tickets to reserve your plate.
Enjoy the days.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

Highland dancers
compete at Strathroy
Four highland dancers and their
teacher from Summerside, PEI
travelled on the weekend to
Strathroy, to compete in the
Highland Dancing. Among them
were Lacey and Jodi Fischer 14-
year-old daughters of Randy and
Cathy and granddaughters of Ken
and Liz Sholdice and Roy and
Donna Fischer.
On Saturday Lacey participated in
the Ontario Open Highland Dance
Championships and won a fourth
and three fifth placings to place
fourth runner-up in her age category.
On Sunday at the Western Ontario
Highland Dance Association
competition. Lacey won three firsts,
a second, and a fourth which was
enough to win the overall trophy for
premier age 14 group.
Jodi participated at Novice level
and placed eighth in her age group.
The Sholdice and Fischer families
enjoyed a visit with the Islanders and
watching the girls dance.
Rebekahs meet
The regular meeting of Morning
Star Rebekah Lodge, Brussels took
place with Noble Grand Sister Elva
Brown presiding.
Members welcomed Sister Leona
Harrison by transfer to membership
in the Lodge at this meeting.
The nomination of elective
officers took place and will be
completed at the next meeting.
The members of St. Marys Lodge
will bring the travelling Gavel to the
Brussels Lodge on May 10.
By Jo-Ann McDonald
The Friday night supper of
sausage and sauerkraut was enjoyed
by a good crowd at Brussels Legion.
The Saturday fish fry at the
Branch saw over 140 enjoy the meal.
Special thanks to Comrade Helen
Dobson who supplied 'dessert. Fish
Fry cooks included Rick McDonald,
Gord Jacklin. Murray Lowe,
Lawrence Machan and Captain
Grobbo of the Brussels Cadet Corp.
There were also two cadets doing the
running and two cadets on table
cleaning duties. They were a great
help and we thank them.
Our next big meal is the Mother’s
Day dinner on May 8 from 4:30 - 7
p.m. Tickets are available at the
Branch or by calling 887-6570 to
reserve your table. The smorgasbord
dinner will include roast beef and
chicken breasts and all the fixings.
See our ad for more information.
Comrade President Norm Dobson
attended the District Convention in
Owen Sound on the weekend.
Comrade Glenn Bridge also
attended on Sunday.
A reminder that Tuesday, April 26
is the general meeting and elections
will be held. A secretary and
treasurer are still being sought, so
please call 887-6570 if interested in
either job.
With the onset of good weather we
see less traffic in the Branch, so less
revenue. The Branch is busy with
many fish fries to bring revenue in,
so expect a call to help. Workers will
be needed so the same people don’t
get worn out. It’s not a tough job,
and we have lots of fun while
working, so be prepared when I call
asking for help.
