of the least expensive model, which
had a price tag of just over $10,500.
Even though the side discharge
did not meet the specs, the John
Deere 757 does have a two-year
warranty.
When asked if the lawnmower
had been budgeted for, Forrest said
he had budgeted $25,000 for a
lawnmower, but that particular item
of the budget was tabled at an earlier
meeting this year.
Council voted in favour of
accepting Forrest’s recom
mendation of the lawnmower.
WDH reps make presentation
Margret Comack, chief executive
officer of Wingham and Listowel
hospitals, and Verna Steffler, chair of
the Wingham District Hospital board
attended the April 4 meeting of North
Huron council to request support.
In her presentation Steffler noted
that the largest number of patients to
WDH are from the Twp. of North
Huron. Asking for council’s
participation in doctor recruitment.
Steffler said the physician shortage
was not just “a hospital situation, it’s
the whole community.”
With a couple of the hospital’s
doctors nearing retirement, and
recruitment becoming even more
competetive the situation is critical
said Steffler.
Comack said that there is a
shortage of graduates “even worse
that in previous years. We are going
to have to do something drastic to
sustain the number we have.”
The request to council specifically
to assist with the costs of recruitment
was $6,000.
The CEO also gave a report to
council outlining the hospital’s
master plan. She stated that the
hospital is one of only a few to post a
surplus without layoffs. “Our
financial status has us in the good
books with the province.”
The master plan has assessed the
facilities problems and the service
needs for the catchment area.
Comack said that problems were
identified within every area of the
hospital. “The ORs are in a 1947
structure and we are under-sized on
the second floor.”
The plan is for an addition on the
back of the hospital for diagnostics
and an OR suite on the second floor.
Expressing that she feels the
hospital is on the right track
financially and performancewise,
Comack said the “real bottom line is
for you to be a partner with us.”
Stating, that without council’s
financial assistance, the hospital
board would need to use operating
funds for recruitment, Comack said,
“While we are managing, it’s getting
more and more difficult.”
Reeve Doug Layton empathized,
saying, “Some of the difficulties
you’re facing, we’re facing too?’
This was re-iterated by councillor
Arnold Taylor who expressed some
frustration with the request. “Where
would our money come from to
support this? It would come from our
operating fund.”
“It’s a hard struggle when we have
deferred to the next budget meeting.
to say the tax increase is going to be Council thanked the women for
10 per cent, but you're not getting . their presentation. The issue was
that road fixed.”
He also noted that the township has
other hospitals to consider as many
North Huron residents do not use
WDH.
“All we’re saying is help us, work
with us,” said Comack.
