FROM BELGRAVE Church groups meet Belgrave WMS held its meeting on Monday, April 4 at the home of Ivy Cloakey. Freda Scott led in prayer and read a story. Using Our Talents and Gifts to Help Others. Mrs. Cloakey read scripture from Romans 12. The secretary’s report was given by Margaret Siertsema and the treasurer’s report by Mrs. Cloakey. The roll call was a verse from God’s Book of Devotional Sayings. Twenty-nine sick and shut-in calls were recorded. May 9 is the next meeting. April 24 is Mission Sunday with the WMS taking the service. Happy Birthday was sung to Alice Nicholson. A soup and sandwich lunch will be held in the Women’s Institute Hall on April 30. Fourteen members of the Belgrave Evening Unit of the UCW met at the home of Lorna Cook on Tuesday, April 5. Mrs. Cook read a poem Do Something Worthy Each Day. Irene Lamont opened the worship with a poem. Let Me See, which went with her theme, To See Beauty. Lillian Campbell led in prayer then gave the story of David and his being anointed King. Following a hymn Mrs. Lamont read the meditation. The minutes were read and approved and the roll call was answered by, What I Like Most About Spring. The treasurer’s report and the card report were both given. The general meeting of the UCW will be the last Thursday evening of May. Mrs. Cook introduced Pat Barnes, who with her husband Jim had travelled to Managua, Nicaragua in February. They were a part of a group of 28 and were sponsored by the Presbyterians Aiding Nicaragua (PAN). While there they had the opportunity to either work at a home for seniors, a public school, or visit and help out at schools, hospitals, orphanages and other senior citizen homes. Pat showed pictures of the various parts of the trip Jim and she had worked on. Pat talked about the people they met and worked with, the children they saw, and some of the crafts she brought home. A real necessity was at the school where there are 350 students with no fresh water fountains available. It doesn’t cost anything to go to Continued on page 25 Lamonts celebrate golden anniversary Jim and Irene Lamont celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday at the Belgrave Women’s Institute Hall. Jim was born in Manson, Manitoba, the son of Jessie and Samual Lamont. Irene was bom in East Wawanosh Twp., the daughter of Winnie and Thomas Smith. The couple were married on April 9, 1955 in the Belgrave United Church manse. The ceremony was officiated by Rev. Charles Cox. PEOPLE AROUND BELGRAVE By Linda Campbell Call 357-2188 The WI annual meeting and potluck is Tuesday, April 19 at 6:30 p.m. The program is the finalists of public speaking from East Wawanosh Public School. Friends and neighbours in the community extend sincere sympathy to Harold and Nancy Jardin and family on the recent loss of Harold’s father Tom Jardin. Many women from Belgrave and area attended the 11th Women’s Day Out on Saturday, April 9 in the Blyth Memorial Hall. It was sponsored by the Blyth United Church Women. The theme this year was, Laughter is Good Medicine. The women were greeted by Vai Mallough, the clown. Gisele Ireland of Teeswater was the guest speaker. Everyone was delighted with the toonie sale again this year. The tai chi demonstration and the music by the Keith family was Looking for local heroes There are so many people out there who do so much to improve their community. Now you have a chance to say thanks. Nominate that special person for the 20th Annual Citizen Citizenship Awards. Each year a committee chooses an outstanding citizen from each of the Blyth and area and Brussels and area communities to receive an award for contribution to the community. If you know someone you think should be honoured, please fill in the ballot and send it in. You may attach a longer explanation of why you think your nominee should win, if you like. If you have nominated someone before and he or she didn't win, please feel free to try again. I nominate as Citizen of the year for I feel she/he deserves this award because Nomination Deadline April 30, 2005.*■ -- £ Name and phone number of nominator-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The attendants were the bride’s sister, Mrs. Amy McCrae and the bride’s brother-in-law, Ralph McCrae. The happy couple went to Toronto, Niagara Falls and New York on their honeymoon. They resided in Belgrave. Jim was a mechanic. Irene worked in the Stedman store in Wingham for some time, prior to her marriage. The couple had five children — Dale; triplets, Dwight, Danny and Donelda; and David. David died at thoroughly enjoyed. There was a smorgasbord lunch with the men helping out and serving coffee, tea and dessert. The afternoon entertainment included One Paul Brother and Shirley and the fashion show. There were demonstrations on reflexology, massage therapy, telehealth, acupuncture, aromatherapy, nurse practitioners, and tai chi. Some of the Belgrave women were lucky enough to win a prize. The ladies are looking forward to the 12th Annual Women’s Day Out which will be held on Saturday, April 8. Attending Jim and Irene Lamont’s 50th were Archie Lamont, a brother of Jim’s who travelled from Virden, Manitoba; Dale and Colleen Lamont, London; Amy and Ralph McCrea, Maureen and Brad Montgomery, Blyth; Doug and Betty Jean McCrea, St. Thomas; and Mike, Donelda, Shawn, Chris and Matthew Cottrill of Belgrave. Congratulations and best wishes are extended from the community to Jim and Irene. Archie Lamont is a guest at the home of Jim and Irene Lamont and will be visiting with relatives before he returns home to Virden, Manitoba. □□ Blyth & area Brussels & area the age of three weeks and Danny died in a car accident at the of 21. Irene was a member of the United Church Women and sang in the choir for 40 years. Both have been members of the 50th anniversary Irene and Jim Lamont cut the anniversary cake during their 50th anniversary celebrations held Saturday afternoon at the Belgrave Women’s Institute Hall.
