Ironmen trailing semi-final series By Jim Brown Citizen staff First draw winners The Mac Inglis foursome earned the Foxton Fuels Ltd. trophy for winning the first draw of the Daytime Curlers season. (Jim Brown photo) The Wingham Ironmen are going to have to pull up their socks if they want any chance of claiming the Clarence Schmalz Trophy as the OHA Junior C champions. After getting past the Erm Shamrocks in six games, the Ironmen find themselves trailing after the first two games of their OHA Junior C semi­ final series with the Essex 73s. After scoring a 3-2 decision in triple overtime last Friday at tlYe North Huron Wescast Community Complex, the Ironmen travelled to Essex on Sunday and were handed a 5-1 setback. Game three in the best four-of-seven series was played Tuesday evening in Essex, with game four going Friday evening in Wingham, beginning al 8 p.m. Matt Hill was the only Wingham goal getter in Essex, with the assists going to Jamie Chester and Nick Filsinger. Jeff Lepelaars scored two for Essex, with singles coming from A. Jay Sweet, Deon Keller, and Andrew' Jackson. Ryan Fry and Hiil scored for Wingham last Friday as the Ironmen took a 2-0 lead into the third period. Luke Williams and Cole Stewart earned assists. Vince Santia and Jackson scored for Essex to send the game into overtime. R. J. Hotts netted the winner at the one minute mark of the third overtime period. The Ironmen finally found the offence in Erin on April as they scored a 3- I decision to win the series in six games. Getting the goals for the Ironmen were Joel Riley from Shawn Walker and Joel Hemingway, Chester from Matt MacPhee and Ryan Fry and MacPhee into an empty net. Third annual WOAA golf tourney set for August The third annual Western Ontario Athletic Association’s (WOAA) celebrity golf classic will be held Saturday, Aug. 20 at the Goderich Sunset Golf Club. Tee-off time for the 18-hole scramble format event is 11 a.m. Each team will be comprised of four players along with a celebrity. Celebrities will include hockey players, fastbal 1/basebal I players, country music singers, local sports stars and politicians. 3096, Gary Gravett at 524-8047 or the WOAA office at 357-3512.
