Sports ____ Brussels minor hockey presents annual awards By Jim Brown Citizen staff The four major awards were given out at the Brussels Minor Hockey Association’s dessert banquet held April 6 at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre. The Don Higgins Memorial Award for the top goalie in the association was presented to Austin Johnston. The Tom Schauber Award for the most improved player in the Atom division went to Shawn Dale. The Coach’s Award went to Jim MacDonald and the Trainer/Manager’s Award was presented to Randy White. Players in the Pre-Tyke division introduced themselves. The coach said they started off the season with some of the players not even knowing how to skate. They ended with a good season. All the players received a trophy. The coaches for the Tyke team said they had a good year and competed in a couple of tournaments. All the players received a trophy. Coaches for the Novice team gave each player a compliment and also presented each player with a trophy. Christopher Ross was the most improved player in the Atom division. The most sportsminded player was Derek Woods and the most dedicated player was Nathan Watson. In the PeeWee division, Blake Cardiff was the most improved player, Randy Zwep the most sportsminded player and Brendan Stretton the most dedicated player. Danny Dwyer was the most improved player in the Bantam division. Zach Hoegy was the most sportsminded player and Wade Stephenson the most dedicated. Lacey McArter was the most improved player for the Bantam girls team, Lindsay Watson was the most sportsminded player and Jory Uyl the most dedicated player. Shane Cochrane was the most improved player on the Midget team. Greg Bowers was the most sportsminded player and Cory Chapman was the most dedicated player. Don Higgins Memorial Award The Don Higgins Memorial Award for the best goalie in the Brussels minor hockey system was presented to Austin Johnston. He was presented the award by minor hockey president Paul Sebastian. (Jim Brown photo) 2004/05 Lady Mustangs The Madill Lady Mustangs recently concluded a successful season. They reached the second round of playoffs at the OFSAA hockey championships, held in Orillia in late March, before having their season come to an end. The team finished the 2004-2005 season with an overall record of 20-7-0. The team won the Ice Garden’s Elite tournament, were Huron champions, Huron-Perth champions, were WOSSAA silver medalists and were in the top eight at OFSAA A/AA.
