The Citizen, 2005-04-07, Page 11Hello there everyone. Nice to see you all back for another peek at what Auburn is offering this week. I guess the first thing we better get is a good cup of tea. I have my feet up, my pencil sharp and I am ready to spill - the news, not the tea. I start off this week with some sad news. Roger Pannabecker born March 12, 1950, passed suddenly at his home on March 30. Roger was a masonry contractor by trade and a great lover of horses and along with his team; Roger made an effort to participate in every local parade and event. He and Elsie (Schoeder) were married in 1987 and have lived on their farm, at RR2, Auburn ever since. Roger leaves wife Elsie, daughter Jody Younglao, sons Brian and Allan as well as siblings, additional family members, and friends too numerous to count. Roger also leaves behind parents, Margaret and Jim Errington of Dungannon. You are all in our thoughts and prayers at this most burdensome time. The Auburn community extends their sympathy to Ruth Jardin and family with the passing of Ruth’s husband Tom. The Jardins are now living in Blyth but were long-time residents of the Auburn community. A service was held on Tuesday, April 5, at Knox church Auburn. We wish Ethel Ball a speedy recovery. Ethel broke a small bone in her ankle while at the cottage and is now using aids to get around until the bone heals. She was just stepping onto a patch of leftover snow and there was some ice underneath and she slipped. Her foot went under the deck railing and twisted. This should act as a warning to us all. Everyone is out and about shaking off the winter and seeing if their street shoes still fit. Some folks are coming and some folks arc going and maybe there are even some out there who aren’t sure which way to go- We welcome Marilyn and Peter Verbeek back to the Auburn community after their winter stay in Florida. They stayed at a park in Palmetto, which is south of Tampa and near Bradenton. They had a wonderful view of the Manatee River and enjoyed the area very much. Gordon and Bernice Gross spent the weekend in the Toronto area and visited their daughter April Gross who lives in Oshawa. Sandy and Shirley Andrews along with Greg and Nancy Park are tickled blue that a mutual great nephew has arrived. Reed Thomas Helm arrived early Sunday morning to meet parents Doug and Jenni Helm from the Lucknow Dungannon area. Jenni is the niece of both the Andrews and Parks. I sure hope you have all learned to share. Congratulations to all. There were 12 folks joined up at the Coffee Hour that is held every Thursday from 9:30-10:30 at Stickers in Auburn. With that many people showing up, there must be something very interesting to chat about. And of course the good coffee is always a draw. Can anyone join in? I am told picture-taking day at Knox went well with everyone having a good time. People brought pets in to be photographed as well. Mark Belvedere was the photographer from Toronto and he thoroughly enjoyed his time in Auburn. He was born in New York and his family settled in Toron to. If you missed your appointment or would like to make an appointment call Karen McClinchey and she will direct you to the contact person at Londesborough. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, APRIL 7, 2005. The Auburn Women’s Institute hosted the day for Huron West Institutes. The craft was making a pineapple placemat but some extended their creative inspiration and fumed the idea into making cushion tops. There will be another craft day in the fall that will be open for WI members and non-members alike. There is a fee of $5. Manner Maniacs learn about living with disabilities The fourth and fifth meetings of Wawanosh Manner Maniacs were held on March 28 at the home of Mary Ellen Foran. At these meetings the members pretended they had disabilities so that they would learn the best ways to communicate and be polite to others who do have them. All of the members took a turn in a wheelchair, on crutches, with a walker, wearing a blindfold, or glasses which impaired their vision. They put cotton balls in their ears to affect hearing, and tried using only one hand. It took the members quite a while to figure out how to steer the wheelchair and how to wash their hands while in it. Along with experiencing the actual disabilities, they learned not to treat those who have them any differently and to give help only when it is asked for. These encounters left the members with more empathy for those who have a disability. The members also learned the best way to pack a suitcase and other travelling etiquette. They also discussed when a thank you note is necessary after a stay at someone else’s home. The members finalized the plans for their achievement at the Auburn Lions pancake breakfast and the final meeting’s pool party. The Auburn Lions provided the wheelchair, walker and crutches, and are allowing the 4-H members to help them serve at their breakfast on April 10.
