Sports Mustangs finish With an overall record of 2-1-1 at the OFSAA A/AA boys hockey championship, the Madill Mustangs had a very respectable showing, according to coach Paul Bartman. The provincial championship was played last week in Windsor. The coach said in the four games, they scored 19 goals and gave up 11. They tied for second in their pool, with the Malvern Black Knights of Toronto. In the round robin, Malvern defeated Madill 3-2 to earn the second- place position. Bartman congratulated the team for winning the WOSSAA champ-ionship and for representing the school and the community in a positive and respectful manner. The Mustangs were assessed a total of 32 minutes in penalties in the tourney. The 15th seeded Mustangs took on Lester B. Pearson Patriots of Burlington in their first game and surprised the second-seeded school 3-2 behind some solid goaltending of Anthony Peters of Madill. Pearson opened the scoring, just 32 seconds alter the opening faceoff. Madill tied the game at one late in the first period, on a goal by Cory MacDonald, tipping in a point shot from Adam Corbett. Pearson took a 2-1 lead at 7:42 of period three, and on the next shift, Chris Corbett tied the game for the Mustangs, with assists going to Tate Stephenson and Dan Murray. With just over five minutes remaining in the contest, Andy Cline scored what proved to be the winner after some great forechecking pressure by Cline and linemate Jarris Ireland and Adam Macdonald. Pearson continued to apply pressure during the last two minutes of the contest, and Peters made an unbelievable save on a wrap-around attempt with 1:10 left in the game. Coach Bartman said the keys to the victory were a great team effort and some strong physical play. The Mustangs went up against the 18th seeded St. Martin Mustangs of Mississauga in their second game and Madill skated to an easy 9-1 decision. Madill held a 3-0 advantage after the first period on goals by A. Macdonald from Cline and Ireland, Cline from Cory Chapman, and A. Macdonald from Cline. The game was a re-match of the 2004 OFSAA opener for Madill, with the two teams skating to a 2-2 draw in that contest. The 2005 contest featured numerous lead changes, with lots of end-to-end rushes and great saves by the goaltenders at both ends of the ice. C. Corbett put Madill up early, with help from Murray and Cal McDonagh. The Thunder then responded with three goals in less than five minutes to put the Mustangs back on their heels. Madill came out flying in the second period, scoring three times in the first five minutes to take a 4-3 lead. Scoring were Murray from Stephenson, Ireland from Cline and A. Macdonald and Tiffin from Murray and C. Corbett. Trinity tied the game at four before the end of the period. The third period was a tight checking affair, with neither team giving an inch. White finally broke the tie, with help from Drennan and Brett Phillips. Unfortunately, Madill was unable to preserve the lead and the Thunder evened the score with just over five minutes to play. Coach Bartman said this was a very good game and another great team effort. Peters played another strong . game in goal for Madill. The final game of the round-robin for the Mustangs was against the seventh seeded Malvern Black Knights of Toronto. Going into the contest. Madill knew they needed a win or a tie to advance to the quarter-final round. Bartman said the Mustangs came out flying in the first period, playing almost flawless hockey. Peters made some key saves in the Madill net, and the Mustangs were finally rewarded for their hard work when A. Macdonald scored on a great pass from Cline. The Cline line struck again over three minutes later when Ireland banged in a rebound in front of the Malvern net. Assists went to Cline and A. Macdonald. Madill lost its focus for a few minutes when a couple of their teammates were injured due to apparent slashes by one of the Malvern players. Malvern held a 3-2 lead going into the third period. Madill dominated the third and despite having many chances to tie the game, including a pair that were stopped right on the goalline, the Mustangs were unable to earn the much-needed point. “This was a great game that could have gone either way,” said Bartman. “The team gave it everything they had right to the final buzzer.” A season ends In one of the last games before the ice was removed for the year, the Blyth PeeWees faced off against Milverton March 28.
