School board hopes for juggling this September
By Stew Slater
Special to The Citizen
The 2005 International Plowing
Match (IPM) and Rural Exposition
is on a crash course with the 25th
anniversary of Terry Fox’s Marathon
of Hope in Perth County, but
officials of the Avon Maitland
District School Board hope
schoolchildren and administrators
can adequately juggle their
schedules next September.
At a regular meeting Tuesday,
March 23, trustees voted 8-1 in
favour of “strongly encourag(ing)”
all schools to take part in a
nationwide Marathon of Hope
celebration next Friday, Sept. 16.
The motion arose from a report from
the board’s delegate to the Ontario
Public School Boards Association
(OPSBA), North Perth trustee Jenny
Versteeg, who related details of a
presentation at the provincial lobby
group’s February gathering.
“The goal is . . . students running
at the same time,” Versteeg wrote in
her report, “with British Columbia
starting at 9 a.m., Ontario at noon
and so on. The organizers are
advertising this as “the largest event
ever in Canadian history. They want
to get students involved.”
Perth County students and school
administrators, however, will face a
particular challenge due to the 2005
IPM, set for Sept. 20-24 at Carson
Farms and Auction Services just
outside Listowel. The IPM, an
annual showcase of all things rural
and agricultural that sets up its
extensive Tent City in a different
Ontario location each September,
traditionally has a heavy focus on
education and students. Schools
from the entire host region become
involved.
Perth East trustee Tina Traschel -
who, like Versteeg. is a farmer —
acknowledged the scheduling
challenge. But she led the call
among trustees to encourage schools
to take part in the Marathon of Hope
celebration. She pointed to
Versteeg's OPSBA report, which
suggested the benefits of
participation could include
“fostering good relationships
with...community at the beginning
of the school year”, “good
opportunity for character
education”, and “being part of a
‘defining moment' in Canadian
history.”
“I realize it’s right around the
plowing match, but 1 really think it
will be valuable to be a part of this,”
Traschel said.
“1 know I’ll be out there on that
day, at whatever school is taking
part.”
