Brussels Tykes win
tournament B title
The Monkton Midget girls played Rochester in a Southwestern Girls Hockey championship
game on Thursday night in Blyth. (Vicky Bremner photo)
On Saturday, March 26 the
Brussels Tykes finished up the
season with their year-end
tournament in Hensall.
The first game of the day for
Brussels was against Blyth. Early in
the opening period Brussels jumped
out in front on an unassisted goal by
Kai Hiemstra.
Shortly after Hiemstra would give
the Tykes a 2-0 lead on another solo
effort.
Blyth would fight back and cut the
lead in half.
Wyatt Ducharme would quickly
restore the two-goal lead, with the
lone assist going to Mitch
Kellington.
Blyth would fight back to within
one again before Hiemstra would
restore the two-goal lead with his
third of the game.
Blyth was not done as they scored
three straight goals to take a 5-4 lead.
With time winding down and the
Brussels net empty, Brussels came
close to two, but couldn’t make it
before time ran out.
Brussels’ second game was against
Elma-Logan. Brussels played hard
and walked away with an easy 14-1
victory.
Scoring for Brussels were
Hiemstra with six, Tim Waechter
with three, Kellington with two,
Ducharme with two and Dawson
Peachey.
Picking up assists were Kellington
with four, Nick Garnet with three,
Ducharme with two, Waechter with
two, Scott Dolmage with two,
Hiemstra with two, and Peachey
with two. S
ingle assists went to Scott Bann,
Jason Baxter, Logan Clark, Ben
Hruska and goaltender Matt
McNichol.
With the win Brussels moved onto
the B final to face Zurich. Brussels
would control the game from start to
finish and post a 9-2 victory to take
home the B side trophy.
Scoring for Brussels were
Hiemstra with five, Ducharme,
Colton Hastings, Kellington and
Clark who got his first goal of the
year.
Picking up assists were Kellington
with two, Ducharme, Hruska, Clark
and Hiemstra.
Blyth hosts Southwestern Girls
Southwestern Girls Hockey made
a visit to the Blyth arena on
Thursday, March 23.
The first game of the Midget A
Girls’ championship between the
West Division Champs, Elma-
Logan Wildcats and the East
Division Champs, Rochester Edge
was played. These two teams had
never met before and expected
nothing less than a fast-paced game.
A quick start by both teams did
not disappoint anyone. Rochester
would score the only goal of period
one on a steal in the Wildcats
zone.
Elma-Logan would control the
second getting one of their own to
tie the game.
The third was end-to-end hockey,
with both teams having their
chances and great goaltending. A
pair of untimely penalties in the last
minutes of play put Rochester up on
five on three. The Wildcats tried
again to hold off this strong team
but Rochester would net one to win
the game 2-1.
Having a deadline for completing
the series and the fact the Wildcats
had a tournament on the weekend,
game two was held at 9 a.m. in the
Monktonarena.
