He did time in the penalty box in my place. Christ dying for us sinners is the ultimate demonstration of God’s own love for us (Rom 5:8). Mysteriously, wonderfully, Jesus made it possible for us who were ‘toast’ in sin to be completely cleansed and reconnected with God. Now. by being sorry for our wrongs and believing He is who He says, we can enter the presence of the Most Holy by the blood of Jesus; we can “draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience” (Heb 10:19.22). So Easter is a time of rejoicing in God through Jesus in whom we have received reconciliation: those once at odds have now been brought together again (Rom 5:11). The resurrection is not just the raising back to life of one man, but God’s “stamp of approval" on the transaction Jesus had died to carry out, declaring Him with power to be God’s very Son (Rom 1:4). Of the two birds in the cleansing ceremony, one died and the other was freed. Barabbas was a guilty murderer, deserving to die for his crimes; but he was released and Jesus suffered on the bloody rack that should have been the criminal’s (Matt 27:26). Did Barabbas look at the crosses on the hill that day and wonder at the exchange that had taken place? He was flying free while another paid the price instead.
