March 19 they were awarded the WOAA Dave Nelson Atom Division trophy. They finished off the playoffs against Chesley in a two-out-of-three series. The first game of the series was played in Chesley Tuesday, March 15. Brussels came-through with a 5- 4 win. Chesley was back in Brussels on Saturday, March 19 for an exciting game. The game ended in sudden death, and a score of 8-7. Shea McLean scored the first goal for Brussels unassisted. The second goal was scored by Adam Cousins, assisted by McLean and Ethan Nichol. Cousins came through again for the third goal, assisted by Nichol. McLean got his second of the game assisted by Cousins. The fifth goal wtis put in by Derek Woods unassisted. Ryan Sholdice was next to send one between the pipes. Evan Smith got the assist. Woods came back again to score the seventh goal with a high flying puck. With approximately 32 seconds left in the game Chesley tied it. The game then went into sudden­ death overtime. Eight minutes in McLean tipped it in the net off a rebound shot from Woods. Nathan Watson was solid in goal for the team through this series and the season. The defence squad of Higgins, McGavin, Ross and Dale did an excellent job this year. This year’s Atom team is, Shea McLean, Adam Cousins, Ryan Sholdice, Derek Woods, Kody Higgins, Chris Ross, Jeremy Ross, Jacob McGavin, Shawn Dale, Evan Smith, Ethan Nichol, Lane Sebastian, Nathan Watson, Mitchell Kraemer. Coaching staff are Paul Sebastian, coach; Kenny Higgins, manager and Doug Sholdice, trainer. Brussels Tykes play Seaforth Atom girls The Blyth Atom girls skated Tuesday evening at the Blyth Centre. (Jim Brown photo) against Walkerton last and District Community Blyth Novices win tournament A title The Blyth Novices won the A- side championship of the Teeswater tournament held March 12 at the Teeswater-Culross Memorial Community Centre. Blyth went up against the host Teeswater team in the championship contest and scored an 8-3 victory. Mike Van Wyk paced the win with two goals and three assists. Alex Peters had two goals and one assist. Dylan Bromley collected a goal and an assist, with Dalton Richmond, Spencer S'evenson and Trystan Weber netting single markers. Ryan Nesbitt and Wyatt Carey received one assist apiece. Matt Van Wyk earned the win in the Blyth net. Teeswater scored once in the first period and added two more in the third. Peters scored three goals and Novice Reps The Blyth Novice Reps won three straight games in their best of five series against Teeswater to become consolation champs. In a resounding victory, the squad trounced their hosts March 19 by a score of 9-0 for the sweep. Spencer Stevenson put the visitors on the board in the first with an unassisted goal. Two minutes later Dustin Pennington slid in off a pass from Matt Van Wyk to Alex Peters to put the team up by two. Then just 60 seconds later. Dalton Richmond handed off to Stevenson. He set up Tykes play Goderich travelled to Blyth to play the Jr. Tykes on Saturday, March 19. Goderich started the scoring with the first three goals. Blyth worked hard and it finally paid off. The first goal was scored by Curtis Raynard, assisted by added an assist as Blyth scored an 8- 0 decision over Wingham in their first game of the tourney. Mike Van Wyk chipped in with a pair of goals. Weber collected a goal and an assist, with single markers tallied by Matt Van Wyk and Carey. Earning one helper apiece were Stevenson, Bromley and Braydon Whitfield. Richmond earned the shutout in the Blyth net. Mike Van Wyk and Peters had three goals apiece as Blyth skated to a 10-0 decision over Lucknow in their second match-up. Mike Van Wyk also received an assist. Stevenson had two goals and an assist and Matt Van Wyk had a goal and an assist. Weber tallied a single marker. Nesbitt picked up two assist and Whitfield collected one helper. Bromley recorded the shutout in the Blyth net. take series the play for Trystan Weber to get the third Blyth goal. The hosts held Blyth back just a little better in the second allowing only two goals. These came off the sticks of Pennington, with an assist from Stevenson, and Alex Peters. In the third, Peters nailed his hattrick, plus one all unassisted to bring the score to 8-0, then Stevenson got his second of the game to finish the scoring. Weber assisted on Stevenson’s goal. Solid between the pipes for Blyth was Mike Van Wyk. Goderich Dallas Coultes. Hunter Dale scored Blyth’s second goal, assisted by Ashley Higgins. Raynard scored two more goals, one assisted by Dale. The fifth Blyth goal was scored by Craig Raynard, assisted by Katherine Chalmers. This past Saturday the Brussels Tykes hosted Seaforth. Brussels got off to a quick start on an unassisted goal by Kai Hiemstra 11 seconds into the game. The lead was short-lived as Seaforth netted two. Brussels would fight back to even thjngs up on Hiemstra's second goal of the game with the assist going to Tim Waechter. Early in the second Seaforth would take the lead for good by scoring seven goals. Hiemstra and Wyatt Ducharme would reply for Brussels but it was a little too late as Brussels would go down 10-4. Waechter and Logan Clark picked up assists on Hiemstra's last goal. Midgets play in tournament The Brussels Midgets participated in the Owen Sound March Meltdown Tournament last weekend. Coaches said the players were a “little rusty and took awhile to get going” in their first game March 18 against Tavistock. Al Johnston played well in net. helping the Brussels squad to a 3-2 victory. Tavistock started the scoring mid­ way into the first, then added another about five minutes later. Then with just under two minutes remaining before the buzzer, Adam McClure skated in, off a pass from Brent Wheeler to Chris Jutzi to close the gap. Tavistock held on to the lead through the second. Brussels played catch up until taking advantage of a double minor in the third period to score twice on the powerplay, making it 3-2. In their second game, Brussels came up against Mariposa. The game ended 3-3, with Mariposa scoring the tying goal at the 40 second mark on a powerplay and coaches say, “a very questionable call.” Scoring for Brussels were McClure, Greg Bowers and Wheeler. The assists went to Tate Stephenson, Jordan Campbell. Steven Ropp and Matt White. After five minutes of overtime the game went to a shootout. White scored for Brussels. However, Mariposa netted three more, to eliminate Brussels from any further action. Coaches are pleased with the team’s efforts this year which boasted 19 victories, 13 losses and two ties. That afternoon Brussels travelled to Zurich, in a game in which Brussels led from start to finish by posting a 7-3 win. Scoring for Brussels were Ducharme with four, Hiemstra with two and Waechter. Picking up assists were Scott Dolmage with two; Hiemstra, two; Dawson Peachy, two; Ducharme, Waechter, Ben Hruska and Nick Garnet. Sunday afternoon was a rematch with Seaforth. Seaforth skated to a 9-1 win. Brussels’ lone goal was an unassisted marker by Ducharme. Matt McNicol played well in goal the first two games of the weekend only to give away to Waechter on Sunday. Brussels finishes off the season with their year-end tournament in Hensail this coming weekend.
