It is not right to give credence to every piece of gossip you hear, and add more to it when you repeat it, It is wholly wrong, and no man or woman imbued with a Christian sirit, or a spirit of right will do it, It is, however, a noticeable feature that those most prone to gossiping, are people who hey no business of their own to attend t The persons who rustles in this livor and makes an effort to keep up wit theproeession has no time to talk atoll other people. Decem- ber. A Pouter. "Advertising here free of charge," would not be a. misplaced notice if in- scribed upon the front of pulpits, as the congregations are often asked to listen. to half a dozen announcements at a time, reference to some social, lecture, concert etc., preparatory to hearing the sermon. The people ought not to be asked to burden their minds with such an undulated mixture of things of earth in. the. house of God; nor should. the pulpit be expected to compete with the press, as the press generally speak- ing,is not so ill liberal with the church- es. Both ought to serve in their own line of usefulness without being com- petitors for advertising. Public School. Board Minntee. SEPT. 2Orn.—Absentees, Dr. Lutz and D. Many of our readers will learn with regret of the failure of Mr.Janrea Pick- ard, of the old established House of this town Mr. Pickard assigned • to Mr. George Sar:well the begining of last week. He was one of the oldest' and most prominent merchanitsiofa . 'eaitern Ontario, He started b° ° . eel when it was but a wilderaleee ani"flair- ing the latter year has occupied a pos- ition of foremost importance in merean- tile interests In Western Ontario, Ike gained the fullest confidence of the farmers, bought their grafin and'invost- ed their money for them. This is said to have been an clement of weakness iu the end, and contributed to his eon- barrassmcnt. When his store business had grown to large proportions he found himself over loaded with stock, His papers were failing due in ntnicom- fortable profusion. The farmers' began to call for their loans, and added to his difficulties, He bad bot'rowed the money on call, and locked it up In various ways so that he could not. re. lease extept at a sacrifice. He: opened a branch store in Seaforth winch, in January 1888, was tirade eyett talihis son, William Pickard. Branch.'Cstores were also opened in Blenhein a teed St, Mary's last April. Tho branches were opened to reduce his stock, and.. the trade questioned the wisdom ; of his move. As looney had become scarce with Mr: Pickard, and his requests for renewals increased, some of the old houses that had been selling to him drew off, but the confidence of some of them continued up to the time of as- signment. As far as we can learn, the unsecured liabilities reach the neigh- borhood of $65,000.00 and the secured $33,000.00, while the assets up to the time of going to press, cannot be given, but are very large. This is the larg- est failure that has ever taken place in this place, and if we are not 'Mistaken in our judgment the Iitrgest has lever been in the country. Ever sence Mr. Pickard has been in ,business some six- ty or sixtyfive hands have; been con- stantly employed -.by • bun ,, 'We feel sorry for some of the creditors, some of whom had savings of a life-timse., there, and who are now left, tve may say, without a cent, except what the divid- end pay. This is the heaviest blow the town has received. A meetipg of the creditors .will be held in London on the 13th and will be largely attended, when farthur developments will no doubt be made. BIRTHS.
