(Jim Brown photo) Citizen reporter, Jim Brown, spent the morning of Mareh 4 at the Brussels Livestock. He talked to livestock owner Len Gamble, as well as some farmers and truckers who were there for the Friday sale. The past few weeks have been filled with optimism as Canadian beef producers waited for the United States border to open for live cattle. However, with the R-CALF group of American western cattlemen — mostly Montana -- successful getting an injunction to keep the border closed, no one is quite sure what will happen next and if and when the border will open. United States President George W. Bush can override the decision. Gamble understood that Bush would veto any legislation keeping the border closed, if it made it through the Senate. The American Secretary of Agriculture said he had no problem eating a steak from a Canadian cow. and would even come to Canada to do it. Gamble indicated if the border stays closed any longer, the Ontario and Canadian governments are going to have to assist Canadian cattleman or else get more meat packing plants up and operating. “These are troubled times for product. “Our biggest market is the United States," he said. Gamble said the Canadian beet industry has shown itself to be very strong during the past 22 months. “No one is asking for money," he said. “We have to try and work through the present situation in order to make sure there is still a light at the end of the tunnel.” “We'll never know until the border is open." He said the prices were very low in 2003. The prices now are quite high for fatted and fed cattle. With the R-CALF group getting the injunction.
