Plowing demonstrations, with
walking and gangplows as well as
modern plows offer an opportunity
to see farming practices as they are
today and of yesteryear.
To participate in the 1PM plowing
competitions, one must obtain the
highest points at the local match,
such as the Huron County match to
be held this year in North Huron.
“We don’t turn any interested
competitors down at the local level,
but they have to be serious. We don’t
want anyone make a mess of the
fields,” said McGavin.
Each year 11,000-14,000 children
go through the educational pods.
McGavin explains that eductors

Even now, he said, the fact that it
factors in to so much of life is often
taken for granted. “Yet there is a

McGavin is surprised that with
today’s technology people aren’t
more in tune to the impact of
agriculture. “With television and the
internet you think people would
have a better idea of what goes on.
But you hear complaints from some
and you know they only have one
part of the story.”
In addition to trying to broaden
perspectives the OPA is also
challenged now by new regulations
and insurance costs. “There is only
one insurer now we can turn to,”
said McGavin.
Planning for the huge IPM starts
years ahead of its scheduled date.
“There are many, many meetings,”
says McGavin. “They always say
volunteers are priceless, but if
everyone on that 1999 committee
had been paid even $1 an hour you
couldn’t afford to do it. “
In August, the hydro is put in at
the site and the permanent buildings
are erected at the end of that month.
“From there it’s full steam ahead,”
said McGavin. “The week before is
hell on wheels when everbody is
trying to move in at once.”
On the 80 acres there will be
hawkers tents, two or three
permanent buildings, models,
demonstration and exhibits. There is
a family program and a variety of
entertainment throughout the event.
“You can't do it justice in one day,”
says McGavin, of visiting the site.
The budget for the match is
closely scrutinized, said McGavin,
since the overbudget in 2001.
“Every committee has to have a
budget and they’re held tight to it.”
