Planning for the huge IPM starts years ahead of its scheduled date. “There are many, many meetings,” says McGavin. “They always say volunteers are priceless, but if everyone on that 1999 committee had been paid even $1 an hour you couldn’t afford to do it. “ In August, the hydro is put in at the site and the permanent buildings are erected at the end of that month. “From there it’s full steam ahead,” said McGavin. “The week before is hell on wheels when everbody is trying to move in at once.” On the 80 acres there will be hawkers tents, two or three permanent buildings, models, demonstration and exhibits. There is a family program and a variety of entertainment throughout the event. “You can't do it justice in one day,” says McGavin, of visiting the site.
