County council briefs County health unit will no longer have leased vehicles Huron County Health Unit staff will no longer have the use of leased vehicles. County council at its March 2 meeting approved the plan not to lease vehicles once the current leases are complete and instead to pay mileage to staff for use of their own vehicles. “As far as 1 know we’re the only health unit that has its own vehicles.” said Penny Nelligan, manager of the health unit. She estimated the move would save $30,000 - $40,000 a year. Huron County councillors will not be getting laptop computers to cut down on the amount of paperwork and mailing costs for their reports. With a tight budget the proposal was set aside with a recommendation that it be brought up again in December 2006 when the new council is elected. Councillor Rosemary Rognvaldson is still worried about the amount of paper being used, however. She suggested reports that have been given at a meeting one month need not be reprinted as background for meetings a few months later. Councillors should be able to go back and find the report, she said. But East Huron councillor Bernie MacLellan said there were advantages to repeating reports, particularly for those who might have missed a meeting. Meanwhile Central Huron councillor John Bezaire who had originally recommended moving to the laptops, said he agreed there was no cost saving from computers but they were much more efficient in locating information. ♦♦♦ At its next meeting council will consider a resolution calling on the federal and provincial governments to provide more aid to struggling farmers. “They've sat on their hands for the last year and done nothing.” complained Ben Van Diepenbeek. councillor for Ashfield-Colborne- Wawanosh in proposing the county take action. The resolution will be drafted in time for the April meeting of council. ♦♦♦ Council approved a $365,000 study by Totten Hukicki Associates into the rehabilitation of bridges and culverts. The amount does not include the engineering of individual projects. *** Under the salary disclosures act. the incomes of all employees with salaries of greater than $100,000 must be made public. The county had four employees making that amount of money in 2004: director of the health unit. Penny Nelligan at $116,896.76; CAO Larry C. Adams. $114,696.82; treasurer David Carey, $107,441.86 and medical officer of health Dr. Beth Henning. $102,699.86.
