Cardiff hosts Brussels UCW meeting 1-17 God’s The hymn, Sing wasto the guest from the The March meeting of the evening unit of the Brussels UCW met at the home of Karen Cardiff with nine members and one guest present. Nelva Scott opened the meeting with the UCW Purpose, then led the devotions with the reading Catching Rainbows. This was followed by the scripture Genesis 9: covenant with Noah. Come, Children, Join followed by prayer. Mrs. Scott introduced speaker Yvonne Kitchen Huron Hospice Volunteer Services who spoke on the Rainbows Program which was organized by Susie Marta from Chicago. Mrs. Kitchen’s first interest was palliative care which she described as helping a person on their final journey of death. But she explained the rest of the family were left without help, so started the Grief Recovery a 12- week course for adults. But there was no support for children (known as the forgotten ones). Thus began Rainbows. It deals with children who have suffered a loss from many different circumstances; a move, loss of a pet, a family separation, or a death. Mrs. Kitchen asked for descriptions from those attending about the loss of a pet and how it was dealt with and how they dealt with disappointments and anger. Most as children had loving parents to talk to. She explained that grief was a journey from the head to the heart. She shared several personal situations. She showed a video explaining the Rainbows program and children sharing some personal situations. She said Rainbows is a self-help group run with a facilitator. Children support each other. The program runs for 45 minutes a session and includes such weekly programs as uniqueness and inside- out. Each program contains a craft session and time of sharing. It gives the children a voice where they can share their feelings. The children arc divided into age groups. Mrs. Wheeler gave a great report indicating how the UCW had raised and spent their money for the year 2004. Mrs. Bernard gave a report on the stewards meeting. She handed out new calling lists. The next meeting is Wednesday, April 6 at Huronlea. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. Women’s shelters get funding A Strong Woman opens WI The Majestic Women’s Institute met in the Brussels Library on Wednesday, March 9 with 14 present. The president, Kathy Bridge, opened the meeting with a poem, A Strong Woman. Following the opening and reports, it was decided to give $50 to the 4-H work and $25 for a 4-H prize at the Brussels Fall Fair. Arrangements were made for the District’s craft show and sale in Listowel on April 9 at the Legion. Lucy Hesse offered to take articles for the craft show to Listowel on April 8. It was decided that all members qualified for volunteer awards. Membership fees will be raised to $25 to be paid by the members and the remaining to be paid from the WI funds. Kathy Bridge introduced the speaker, Laura Heinmiller, who spoke on roses and landscaping. She gave a lot of information on growing roses. Roses require five to six hours a day of sunlight. There are many varieties - climbing roses, floribunda, grandiflora and hybrid teas. etc. The soil should be 10 parts peat and 40 parts compost or manure. You should test for PH levels. If you need more acidity you need more peat. Always water in the morning. Pruning is also advised. Ruth Bauer thanked Mrs. Heinmiller and presented her with a gift- It was decided to quilt another quilt for a friend. Happy Birthday was sung to Lucy meeting Hesse and Chen Fransen. Lunch was served by Cathrine Campbell and Lucy Hesse. The McGuinty government is investing $26,715 to help the Women's House of Bruce County and $14,365 to help the Women’s Shelter, Second Stage Housing of Huron.
