Local woman represents Canadian Quakers at world gathering Katrina McQuail, a Lucknow area woman, is one of two delegates from Canada to the World Gathering of Young Friends 2005 being held in England from Aug. 16-24. There will be Young Friends (ages 18-35) from all over the world. A similar gathering was held in 1985. The Gathering will be held at Lancaster University in northern England. Lancaster is close to many places that are connected to early Quakers, including Pendle Hill, where founder George Fox had a vision, and Lancaster prison, where many Quakers spent time because of their religious beliefs. The Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) developed in England 350 years ago and spread out across the world. Friends were noted from the beginning for their testimonies regarding social equality, worldly simplicity, peace and the belief that "there is that of God in everyone”. Early Quaker gatherings were in the form of silent Meetings for Worship where the participants gathered in silence and could speak if they had a message to share. There were no clergy or pastors. As Quakerism spread it has developed several other branches and now includes pastoral meetings which employ pastors and a programmed worship format as well as Evangelical Friends. McQuail comes from the Silent Meeting for Worship tradition and is looking forward to meeting with delegates from Africa, South America and the United States who come from other traditions. “We will study and learn from our heritage and share our present day expressions of faith. By sharing our experiences of living our Quaker testimonies on peace, equality and simplicity in our varied cultures, we seek growth and transformation for ourselves and the world" she said.
