Wind turbines could come to McKillop
By Mark Nonkes
Special to The Citizen
Huge wind turbines in the
McKillop ward of Huron East may
not be so far away.
As wind energy enthusiasts roam
the countryside, farmers are being
convinced wind energy is the way of
the future. When that time comes
huge wind turbines could dot the
landscape of Huron East.
The benefits of wind energy are
great, says Scott Tousaw, a Huron
County planner, but municipalities
have to be prepared to deal with
these imposing structures on the
horizon.
Huron East council took a further
look into the issue of wind energy at
the March l council meeting to help
prepare themselves as farmers
in McKillop ward draw up con
tracts with wind energy
organizations.
According to Sharon McClure, a
McKillop ward councillor, some
farmers have already signed lease
option contracts, the first step in
erecting a large wind turbine.
The process right now, for setting
up one of these towers would be
simple clerk-administrator Jack
McLachlan told council. In the
current zoning bylaw there are no
regulations for wind turbines and if a
farmer came into Huron East right
now, the municipality would have to
grant the application to build.
Tousaw explained that wind
organizations will pay farmers
$7,000-$ 10,000 per half acre to
compensate for the space the wind
turbine takes up in a field.
“I didn't figure it out per acre but
it certainly pays better than corn,"
Tousaw said.
In his presentation to council.
Tousaw reported that one of these
turbines, similar to the machine on
Lake Huron in Port Albert, is able to
produce enough electricity to supply
300 houses.
The lasting effect is a cleaner and
natural source of energy which
allows for significant contributions
to air quality, Tousaw commen
ted.
In Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh,
a multi-site wjnd turbine project has
already been approved by their
council.
"We’ve had no opposition for
these projects,” Tousaw said.
For Huron East, Tousaw advised
council to lake a hard look at
changing the procedure and
encouraged council to get
community involvement in making
special provisions to add large wind
turbines in the municipality’s official
plan.
Tousaw suggested changing
zoning bylaws, holding public
meetings and finding local
organizations to assist with the topic
of wind energy.
“The fuel is free.”
Council will look further into the
issue in the future.
Student requests recycling system for AMDSB schools
By Stew Slater
Special to The Citizen
A Grade 9 member of the
Stratford Central Secondary School
(SCSS) Environment Club has
given a letter to trustees and senior
staff of the Avon Maitland District
School Board, requesting the
implementation of a standardized
recycling system throughout its
schools.
“There are many other students I
know of who are inclined to lessen
their negative environmental impact
on our world, yet they have neither
the time nor the resources,” wrote
Kelsey Cunningham, who attended
the board’s regular meeting
Tuesday. Feb. 22.
But if a York University-created
program called “Ecoschools” were
to be instituted by the board, she
argued, “100 per cent of the student
body...would at least possess an
awareness of these issues and of the
solutions.”
Cunningham was accompanied by
the staff liaison for the Stratford
secondary school’s Environment
Club, Kerry McManus. The SCSS
teacher-librarian called on the board
to “adopt a waste management
strategy” that’s in keeping with the
environmental stewardship portion
of Ontario’s curriculum, and with
the provincial government’s
recycling goals for all government
departments.
Also contributing was Carolyn
Morris, an occasional teacher with
the board, who said she encounters a
diverse range of recycling
approaches as she moves from one
school to another, or among
different classrooms within a
school.
“There’s quite an inconsistency in
recycling throughout the school
board.” Morris explained. “Quite a
few classrooms have (recycling)
bins but there’s no consistency to
it.”
There’s also inconsistency in
terms of who’s responsible for
coordinating the recycling effort,
she added. “In a lot of cases, it’s the
students who are doing the majority
of the work.”
Stratford trustee Doug Pratley
wondered why students shouldn’t be
responsible. Morris responded that,
if environmental stewardship is part
of the educational curriculum, “the
best way to show it with our
students is through example.”
McManus agreed. She reminded
Pratley that communities don’t
expect only members of
environmental groups to do
everyone’s recycling, so it shouldn't
be left just to environmentally
conscious students and staff to
coordinate recycling in the schools.
Trustees approved a motion,
brought forward by South Huron
representative Randy Wagler, to
refer the matter to the Policy
Committee.
