Ironmen sweep Sailors
The Wingham Ironmen disposed of the Goderich Sailors in four straight
games to advance to the final series of the Western Junior Hockey League.
After taking a three games to none lead in the series on Friday evening in
Goderich, with a 5-2 victory, the Ironmen wrapped up the series in
convincing style at the North Huron Wescast Community Complex on
Saturday, blanking the Sailors 9-0.
Defenceman Joel Hemingway of Brussels earned his first point of the
playoffs in game four of the series, while Cole Stewart of Blyth finally
enjoyed a productive post-season game as he scored once and added three
assists.
Both were quite confident of getting past the Sailors in four games.
However. Hemingway was anticipating closer games from Goderich.
Following game four on Saturday, Hemingway said, “They (Goderich) are
a hard-working team. They never give up.”
The veteran blueliner said everyone contributed to the four-game sweep.
“The defence played well, goaltending was excellent and the forwards were
doing their job,” he said.
The final best four-of-seven series will get underway Friday at the complex,
with the opposition provided either by the Kincardine Bulldogs or the
Hanover Barons.
Hemingway and Stewart really don’t care which of them they play in the
next round. Both agreed it wiil be a tough series.
Stewart said he was pleased that he finally had a productive game, but
noted the Ironmen have a well-balanced attack.
“We have four good lines,” he said.
He said he really wasn’t expecting much of a series from the Sailors.
“It doesn’t matter who we play in the next round, it’s going to be a good
series,” said Stewart.
Luke Williams and Matt Hill had two goals apiece for the Ironmen in game
four. Single goals were added by Ted Leeb, Devin McGuire, Matt MacPhee
and Zach Graham. MacPhee also collected three helpers. Zack O’Krafka,
Matt McCann and Leeb had two assists apiece.
Kurt Edwards turned aside IS Goderich shots to record the shut out.
Stewart netted the first goal of the game for the Ironmen in game three.
Ryan Fry collected a pair of goals, with Shawn Walker and Joel Riley firing
single markers. McCann picked up three assists.
