goes ahead with an 18 per cent
increase, even if her local council
holds the line at less than three per
cent, the increase to a township
resident with a $100,000 assessment
will be $102.
“We’re becoming uncompetitive
with other counties,” said Seili who
suggested the county should refuse
to take part in programs funded
50/50 by the province and stop
remitting monies owed to the
province to get provincial atten
tion.
Earlier in the meeting Morley had
questioned ambulance manager
David Lew about the provision of
advanced life support training for
good turnout each Wednesday
evening.
Last week’s results were Diane
Nonkes being high lady with 94
points and Murray Houston high
man with 125 points.
It was nice to see members from

The lunch was delicious.

paramedics.
“We’ve become one of the models
for a rural ambulance service,” he
said, “but is that why we’re only
funded at 30 per cent of our costs
(when the province promised 50 per
cent)?”
Lew admitted the county had
taken the lead in some items like
installing global positioning systems
on its ambulances to help
paramedics respond more quickly
but he noted funding has eventually
come for many of these initiatives.
Recalling that conversation,
Bezaire suggested that perhaps the
county can’t afford the highest level
of ambulance service or the funding
program for water improvement.

FROM CRANBROOK
“We want to have our cake and eat
it too,” Bezaire said.
Shewfelt suggested there was only
one place to make the kinds of cuts
required to trim the tax increase to a
more manageable level: the bridge
and road budget.
Yes, the roads system needed to
catch up but perhaps it would have
to take longer to catch up, he
suggested.
In the end, Seili’s motion to have
staff bring in a budget with a nine
per cent increase was defeated.
“What we’re doing is giving our
staff a workload they don’t need at
this point,” said East 'Huron
councillor Bernie MacLellan in
arguing against the motion.
