From the Minister’s Study
Minister asks what you’d like to know
By Rev. Cathrine Campbell
Melville Presbyterian Church
Brussels
When you want to know
something there is usually an action
involved or a belief given or
suspended.
Want to know if spring will be
early? Check out Wiarton Willie.
Want to know what time it is? Look
at your watch, then the microwave,
then the VCR then the TV, then
kitchen clock and then make a
decision for all of them will show a
different time.
Want to know what day it is? Ask
someone - they will tell you and
then wonder about your mental
faculties.
Yes, the pursuit of knowledge is
fraught with challenges.
And it was so for Nicodemus - a
learned Pharisee who had heard
much about this fellow, Jesus who
was in town. And so Nicodemus
sneaked out at night to go see this
teacher and learn about God's
kingdom.
The answers Jesus gives surprise
him, and us. for they are both
straightforward and puzzling and for
many they continue to be because
they don't follow the words of Jesus

and let the Spirit be the active force
in their lives by which all things can
be looked at in a new and amazing
way.
There is the way, the truth and the
light through the work of the Spirit,
physical actions are not called for,
elaborate rituals are not asked for
and setting yourself up as better or
more “saved" is definitely not what
is wanted.
What is wanted by Jesus is a
listening ear. a willing mind and a
loving heart.
And we are to know that: For God
so loved the world that He gave His
one and only Son that whoever
believes in him shall not perish but
have eternal life. For God did not
send His Son into the world to
condemn the world but to save the
world through Him. (John 3:16-17).
Another questioner of Jesus was
the young man who asked what he
must do to get eternal life. And he
gets the answer - live this life to the
fullest - obey the commandments
that have been given.
And then he hears “If you want to
be perfect, go, sell your possessions
and give to the poor and you will
have treasure in heaven. Then come,
follow me” (Matthew 19:21).
This turns out to be too much
knowledge for the young man lor he
is very wealthy in this world's goods
and lor him the decision is easy and
he went away - sad we are told - but
he still went away for this was
knowledge that demanded action
beyond what he felt capable of
doing.
And it is a profoundly sad story for
the liberation he would have felt
would have given him a glimpse of
future glory and the comfort he
would have gained following Jesus
in all respects would have given him
much more that he could ever have
hoped or imagined.
Supper
to be
April 24
In the Feb. 24 issue of The Citizen
the story on the Melville Guild's
February meeting incorrectly staled
the date for the springtime supper.
The correct day is April 24.
But it was not to be. We are called
to keep that man in mind as a non
role model and go back to Jesus for
answers in all things.
For Jesus says in answer to “Who
then can be saved?” is “With man
this is impossible but with God all
things are possible.” (Matthew
19:25b-26j
Today we still ask questions, we
still want to know.
But we can be reassured that the
answers are given by a loving God
who sent a saving Son and a Guiding
Spirit and gives us the ability to read
and study God's Word the Bible
with open minds, loving hearts and
new resolve to be as God would
have us be and share the Good News
- daily.
