A Morns ward resident had
concerns about road maintenance in
Morris-Turn berry.
Rodger Somers informed the Feb.
15 meeting of council that the
quality of gravel applied to the
Morris ward roads two years ago
was terrible.
He indicated the problem was the
amount of mud in the gravel. He told
council there was too much of
it.
According to Somers, the reason
there is loo much mud is because it’s
easier and less expensive to put
gravel rather than stone on the
roads.
He indicated the problem with the
roads is not because there is no
crown in the road, but because there
is not enough gravel.
“I can't see paying for gravel and
putting mud down,” said Somers,
Rain adds to the problem by
causing potholes. The potholes are
not due to the lack of crown in the
road.

Special to The Citizen
The City of Stratford has secured
title to a 50-metre strip of property
adjacent to one of its core-area
streets, in return for carrying out
parking lol and laneway
improvements to the Stratford
Central Secondary School (SCSS)
site.
At a regular meeting of the Avon
Maitland District School Board on
Tuesday, Feb. 22, trustees approved
the transfer of a portion of the
tall of 2003," stated Somers. “The
roads last winter were just terrible.”
He indicated he has worked for a
large gravel company and has
worked on a number of highways in
Ontario including the 400 series
highways.
He was also involved in the
construction of Highway
407.
He indicated the problem is also
made worse because they dirt in the
gravel gets stuck in the wheels of
cars.
Somers said the best gravel in the
area is at his place; it is 70 per cent
stone. However, he said the site is
not licensed, but the municipality
could gel a wayside permit for the
site.
He suggested the municipality put
extra gravel on the roads to build
them up and then don’t do any
construction for a few years.

return for the construction
work.
The city receives a four-metre by
50-metre strip of land adjacent to
Worsley Street, which runs
alongside the secondary school. The
street will be widened.
“In return for that, we are getting
some minor site improvements,”
explained vice chair Randy Wagler.
Proposed work includes widening
of the school’s bus turn-around lane
and improvements to the parking
lot.
