Cottrill rink advances to regionals
The Shawn Cottrill rink won four of five draws played
on the weekend to win the B championship of the
Ontario Curling Association’s (OCA) Zone 14 Junior
mixed playdowns held in Teeswater.
The foursome has qualified for the regional playdowns
which will be played this weekend in Vanastra.
Members of the rink include skip Shawn Cottrill, third
Jessica Logtenberg, second Chris Cottrill and lead Kayla
Bishop. The rink is coached by Gord Dougan.
In other OCA zone 14 play this past weekend, the
Leanne Elston rink lost in both the A final and the B final
of the Bantam mixed playdowns held in Goderich.
Members of the rink were skip Elston, third Scott
Miller, second Brittany Horton and lead Elliott Milier.
A Sandra Schmurler fundraising bonspiel was held on
Feb. 19 at Vanastra, with a total of 12 rinks competing.
The Wingham Golf and Curling Club was represented
by two foursomes — one skipped by Emily Elston and a
second skipped by Leanne Elston.
The Leanne Elston-skipped rink was the foursome
with the most money pledged. Over $2,000 was raised
for the Sandra Schmurler Foundation.

Brussels Midgets
eliminated by Hanover
The Brussels Midgets have been eliminated from the WOAA playdowns.
They lost out to the Hanover Falcons in five games.
Game five in the best four-of-seven series was played Sunday at the
Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre, with the visitors scoring a 5-
0 win to claim the series.
Hanover scored once in the first period, added three in the second and then
another one in the third period.
Game four in the series was played Feb. 25 at the Hanover Coliseum, with
the home team scoring a 7-1 decision.
Chris Jutzi was the lone goal-getter for Brussels.
Hanover scored two in the first period, four in the second and added a
single in the third period to round out the scoring.
Game three was played Feb. 23 in Brussels, with Hanover scoring two
unanswered goals in the third period to claim a 3-2 win. HanovcMied the
game at two in the opening minute of the third period, then netted the winner
less than three minutes later.
Jutzi tallied both goals for Brussels, one in the first period and one in the
second stanza. Wade Stephenson earned an assist on the first goal.
Kyle Gibson made many saves in the game. The Brussels squad was
missing a number of players due to injuries and suspensions.
The team played well, but just ran out of gas in period three.
Blyth Novices lose out to
Seaforth, win over Drayton
The Blyth Novices fell to Seaforth in five games.
Blyth tied the series at two games apiece on Feb. 18 when they scored a 2-
0 decision over Seaforth at the Seaforth arena.
Spencer Stevenson and Alex Peters were the goal-getters for Blyth, with
Braydon Whitfield earning one assist. Both goals were scored in the third
period.
Mike Van Wyk recorded the shutout in the Blyth net.
Game five was played at the Seaforth arena on Feb. 22, with the host team
scoring a 4-2 decision to win the series.
Stevenson and Ryan Nesbitt were the goal-getters for Blyth, both coming
in the second period, just 48 seconds apart. Earning assists were Dustin
Pennington and Whitfield.
Mike Van Wyk was in goal for Blyth.
With the loss to the Seaforth, Blyth now plays Drayton on the B side.
The first game was played Saturday in Drayton, with visiting Blyth
scoring a 3-1 win.
Peters had two goals and an assist for Blyth. Matt Van Wyk added one
goal. Stevenson earned an assist.
Blyth did all their scoring in the first period. Drayton scored its goal in the
second period.
