Atoms begin playoffs
The Blyth Atom Local League started playoffs on Feb. 21, hosting
Kincardine 2.
Despite a strong effort from the Blyth team, Kincardine quickly got ahead
of the home team in the first period. The visitors were ahead 4-1 at the end
of the first period, with Wes Thompson scoring the lone goal for Blyth.
In the third period Blyth increased its presence with Steven Ellis scoring a
hattrick. Assists on the goals went to Ronnie Vercruyssen, Jason Meier and
Caroline McDowell.
Unfortunately, Kincardine was just too strong this time for Blyth with the
final score being 8-4 for Kincardine.
Blyth fared much better the next night when the team travelled to Bayfield
to play BCH. The Bulldogs made up for the night before by dominating the
game. The first two goals were scored by McDowell, with the assists going
to Steven Ellis. Late in the first period Ellis added one more to the board
with an unassisted goal.
The second period saw Ellis score again, with assistance from McDowell
and Vercruyssen. McDowell was then backed up by Ellis and Vercruyssen
for another goal for the Bulldogs.
To finish the period off Nick Brandon-Caldwell put one between the pipes,
with the assist going to Cody K.
In the third period Blyth continued solid play with Ellis once again
scoring. This time the assist was picked up by Meier. To cap the game off
Cody K. put Blyth’s eighth and final goal in the net with some assistance
from Heidi Raynard.
Goalie Kennan MacDonald came very close to enjoying another shutout
game, however, with five minutes remaining BCH put one on the board. The
final score was 8-1 for Blyth.
On Sunday, Feb. 27 Blyth travelled to Kincardine for a rematch. Despite
Kincardine coming out very strong at the beginning, Blyth was determined
to put up a good fight. It was truly an exciting game. Cody K. picked up four
goals, while McDowell earned two goals and Ellis recorded one. Brandon-
Caldwell picked up four assists, while Ellis earned three.
At the end of regular period play the score 'was tied at 7-7. Early in
overtime McDowell shot one in the net. assisted by Raynard and Cody K. to
give Blyth the victory.
Also instrumental in this very close game were Nathan Verburg, Laura
Higgins, and Meier on defence, Thompson on forward and MacDonald in
net.
Blyth Junior Tykes
faceoff against Brussels
The Blyth Jr. Tykes faced-off against Brussels in recent hockey action.
Brussels started the scoring with one goal. Blyth came back with a goal
scored by Dustin Treble, assisted by Hunter Dale. Blyth kept up the scoring
with goals by Dale, assisted by Dawson Coultes, Catherine Chalmers
unassisted, Dale, assisted by Owen Weber, Drew Bromley assisted by
Brandon Marshall, Treble assisted by Justin Rodgers.
Brussels came back to score another goal, but Blyth wasn’t done yet. The
next goals were scored by Chalmers with her second goal assisted by Amy
Boyce, who turned around to score assisted by Shelby Higgins. Coultes
bulged the twine assisted by Dale, then they switched things around with
Dale scoring assisted by Dawson.
Blyth loses in OT
The last goal of the game was scored by Craig Raynard assisted by
Chalmers.
The Jr. Tykes'travel to Lucknow this Saturday, March 5.
Blyth PeeWees started playoffs in a round robin with Ripley. BCH and
Seaforth.
The first game was on Feb. 20 against Ripley. Blyth lost 3-2, yet it was a
great game by goaltender Andrew Bailey. There were a lot of shots and
digging by Blyth but they could not come out on top.
Goals were scored by Cody Ducharme and Martin Ellis with an assist
credited to Trevor Raynard.
The second game against Ripley, Feb. 21 was a 4-1 loss. The team was
strong and played well together, outshooting Ripley, but unable to score.
Great goallending again by Bailey. Ducharme scored the lone goal. They
have one more chance to beat Ripley.
In the third game, Ryan Sjaarda scored in overtime to give Blyth the 4-3
win over Seaforth. Seaforth really made Blyth work for the win but the team
never gave up and finally came through.
The first period goal was scored by Jeff Plaetzer, assisted by Dana Teed
and Colton Kerr.
The second period goal was scored by Ken- with an assist from Aaron
Popp.
rhe third-period goal was scored by Martin Ellis. Shawna Popp assisted.
Also great teamwork by Loretta Thompson. Janeke Barten, Ducharme,
Raynard. Andrew Hess and Jordan Bakelaar.
Awesome goaltending by Bailey kept Blyth in the game.
